Pulmonary Embolism Presenting as ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Report of Two Cases.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is often underrecognized due to its ability to mimic other conditions; however, ultrasound can provide diagnostic clues to aid in the diagnosis of PE. We describe two patients who presented with symptoms suggestive of cardiac ischemia and had electrocardiograms (EKGs) indicative of anteroseptal myocardial infarction. In both cases, cardiac point-of-care ultrasonography showed signs of large pulmonary emboli, which were then confirmed on computed tomography angiography of the chest.

Infective Endocarditis Presenting With Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Case Report.

Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease characterized by infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. IE predominately involves the left-sided valves; however, right-sided valvular IE has increased in incidence with intravenous drug use. Treatment of IE is centered on targeted antibiotic therapy and management of complications, including septic embolization, which can affect all of the major arterial beds.

Ozone Therapy versus Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Pain Relief in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: Preliminary Findings on Molecular and Clinical Outcomes from a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Ozone therapy (OT) is used for the treatment of multiple musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in its use for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this double-blind randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of OT compared with hyaluronic acid (HA) injections for pain relief in patients with knee OA.

Anticardiolipin Antibodies in Patients with Cancer: A Case-Control Study.

Antiphospholipid antibodies are highly prevalent in autoimmune diseases and mainly associated with thromboembolic events, which is one of the major reasons for cancer-related mortality. Confirmed adult cancer patients were included (n = 40) with an equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The presence and concentration of anticardiolipin antibodies were investigated by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the venous blood samples.

Geographical trend analysis of COVID-19 pandemic onset in Africa.

Little has been documented in literature concerning the manner of occurrence and spread of COVID-19 in Africa. Understanding the geographic nature of the corona virus pandemic may offer critical response signals for Africa. This paper employed analysis of variance (ANOVA) to show that significant variations exist among African countries', particularly total population as well as those using basic drinking water services, gross national income, expenditure on health, number of physicians and air transport passengers.

Identifying emerging phenomenon in long temporal phenotyping experiments.

Motivation: The rapid improvement of phenotyping capability, accuracy and throughput have greatly increased the volume and diversity of phenomics data. A remaining challenge is an efficient way to identify phenotypic patterns to improve our understanding of the quantitative variation of complex phenotypes, and to attribute gene functions. To address this challenge, we developed a new algorithm to identify emerging phenomena from large-scale temporal plant phenotyping experiments.

Nickel challenge up regulates CD69 expression on T lymphocyte sub-sets from patients with nickel induced contact dermatitis.

Background: Persistent antigenic stimulation due to repeated exposure to nickel may lead to chronic inflammation resulting in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).

Objectives: This study was performed to assess nickel induced immune activation among patients sensitized against nickel.

Patients And Methods: A total of 35 patients (29 females and 6 males; mean age 36±9 years) with nickel contact dermatitis and 20 patch test negative healthy individuals (14 females and 6 males; mean age 29±7 years) were included in this study.

Clozapine-Induced Myocarditis or Acute Coronary Syndrome? Optical Coherence Tomography to the Rescue.

Chest pain and troponin elevation may be due to an acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis, acute cardiomyopathy, or other less common conditions. Management differs depending on the aetiology, and the pathophysiologic diagnosis has direct implications on treatment and patient outcomes. History and clinical examination is supplemented by selected investigations including the electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, echocardiography, coronary angiography, and even myocardial perfusion scintigraphy or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

How to conduct a successful workshop: The trainees' perspective.

Objectives: To define the success of a medical workshop from the trainees' perspective, where a medical workshop is a scientific event with the aim of presenting updated knowledge and to teach medical skills to the participants. In surgical specialties, it contributes to the development and maintenance of surgical skills.

Methods: Medline was searched for the previous 4 months to identify articles with combinations of the keywords 'workshops', 'training', 'simulators', and 'virtual reality'.

Thinking ecologically for safer healthcare: a summer research student partnership.

As leaders for nursing education, nursing research, healthcare administration and patient safety, we asked one another: How do we use our collective resources to build health system capacity for clinically based research training and safer healthcare? Drawing on knowledge from the field of ecological restoration, which is the study and repair of damaged ecosystems, we partnered the Safer Systems research program of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, with Capital Health's Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), the Caritas Health Group, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and several funding agencies to provide hands-on training in clinical research, infection control and patient safety policy development for nursing students during the summer months. As we plan ahead, our student and staff evaluations show that together, we can make concrete, vital contributions to student education, nursing research, evidence-informed practice, clinical quality improvement and national policy. We are using what we have learned to continually expand the range of undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral clinical learning opportunities in healthcare safety that are available year round.
