Are medical students assigning proper global assessment of functioning scores?

Objective: This article seeks to determine whether medical students can estimate the appropriate score for the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) compared with psychiatry residents and staff psychiatrists. The authors hypothesized that medical students' estimations of GAF scores for patients in clinical vignettes would differ from those assessed by the psychiatry residents and staff psychiatrists.

Method: The authors designed a cross-sectional confidential survey of medical students, psychiatry residents, and staff psychiatrists.

Mental health knowledge and skills among preschool nurseries' staff in Alexandria and the effect of an in-service training programme.

Day care centres and kindergartens, have potential effects on children's physical, social and mental developments. The present study was carried out to assess the knowledge and skills of nurseries' staff in Alexandria as regard child mental health, and to evaluate the outcome of an in-service child mental health training programme. For this purpose 10% of the registered nurseries in Alexandria were selected by the stratified random sampling technique using proportional allocation (n = 54) to represent the six districts of Alexandria.

Electrophoretic patterns of protein fractionations in hemolymph and tissues of Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus during course of schistosome infection.

Electrophoresis of plasma protein of B. alexandrina (uninfected & infected with S. mansoni) showed that the major dominant bands had molecular weights of 20, 44, 96, 139 & 205 KD in both types of snails.

Use of alcoholic beverages in VA medical centers.

Background: Benzodiazepines are the first-line choice for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. However, several hospitals continue to provide alcoholic beverages through their formulary for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal. While there are data on the prevalence of this practice in academic medical centers, there are no data on the availability of alcoholic beverages at the formularies of the hospitals operated by the department of Veteran's Affairs.

Skin wounds derive therapeutic benefit from redeployment of dermal tissues, whether as split-thickness allo- and autografts or as biological dressings comprising cultured cells. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson and Alzheimer disease cause motor and cognitive dysfunction and belong to a heterogeneous group of common and disabling disorders. Although the complex molecular pathophysiology of neurodegeneration is largely unknown, major advances have been achieved by elucidating the genetic defects underlying mendelian forms of these diseases. This has led to the discovery of common pathophysiological pathways such as enhanced oxidative stress, protein misfolding and aggregation and dysfunction of the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Adsorption of methylene blue onto bamboo-based activated carbon: kinetics and equilibrium studies.

Bamboo, an abundant and inexpensive natural resource in Malaysia was used to prepare activated carbon by physiochemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) as the activating agents at 850 degrees C for 2h. The adsorption equilibrium and kinetics of methylene blue dye on such carbon were then examined at 30 degrees C. Adsorption isotherm of the methylene blue (MB) on the activated carbon was determined and correlated with common isotherm equations.

Risperidone monotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder related to sexual assault and domestic abuse in women.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a common, chronic, and often disabling mental illness. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the usual first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, but many patients fail to respond adequately. Thus, other treatment options, including the atypical antipsychotics such as risperidone, need to be tested.

Development of adaptable and flexible treatment manuals for externalizing and internalizing disorders in children and adolescents.

In this paper we describe the process used to develop treatment manuals for internalizing and externalizing disorders in children and adolescents. These manuals were developed to offer health care providers and others working in child mental health a flexible intervention that could be adapted to different countries and localities based on: 1) the amount of health care and school resources that are available; 2) the nature and severity of the types of problems children have; and 3) the preferences and cultural factors that are important within these communities. We also discuss the experiences and cultural issues faced by sites in Egypt, Lebanon, Israel, and Brazil who volunteered to implement the manualized treatment programs.

Genetic study of blepharoptosis among Egyptians.

Objectives: This study was aimed to develop an etiological classification of congenital blepharoptosis among Egyptian children and also to differentiate between congenital blepharoptosis as an isolated anomaly or part of a syndrome.

Background: Blepharoptosis refers to dropping of the upper eyelid. The difference in the height of the fissures with the eyes in primary position signifies the amount of ptosis.

Systematic development of an artificial neural network model for real-time prediction of ground-level ozone in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant that has recently gained notoriety for its detrimental effects on human and vegetation health. In this paper, a systematic approach is applied to develop artificial neural network (ANN) models for ground-level ozone (O3) prediction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, using ambient monitoring data for input. The intent of these models is to provide regulatory agencies with a tool for addressing data gaps in ambient monitoring information and predicting O3 events.

Keratinophilic fungi recovered from muddy soil in Cairo vicinities, Egypt.

One hundred samples of muddy soil were collected from seven areas in the vicinity of Cairo and screened for the presence of keratinophilic fungi by using hair baiting isolation technique. Forty isolates of keratinophilic fungi were recovered and identified by recognition of their cultures, macro- and micromorphological features. Their physiological and molecular characteristics were studied by determination of their ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q) composition and DNA sequences of (ITS1-5.

Trigeminal cephalgias and facial pain syndromes associated with autonomic dysfunction.

Trigeminal autonomic cephalgias (TACs) include a spectrum of primary headache syndromes associated with cranial autonomic dysfunction. Other types of headache and facial pain syndromes can be associated with marked localized facial or ear autonomic changes. We report on a group of patients suffering from episodic migraine with cranial autonomic features, patients with different presentations of the 'red ear syndrome' (RES), cluster headache with prominent lower facial involvement and crossover cases.

Kufor Rakeb disease: autosomal recessive, levodopa-responsive parkinsonism with pyramidal degeneration, supranuclear gaze palsy, and dementia.

Kufor Rakeb disease is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by subacute, juvenile-onset, levodopa-responsive parkinsonism, pyramidal signs, dementia, and a supranuclear gaze palsy. It was originally described more than a decade ago, and linkage analysis identified a locus on chromosome 1p36 that was previously assigned PARK9. We have further characterized the clinical picture and specifically re-assessed the response to levodopa in the original family, in the northern highlands of Jordan.

Magnetic resonance imaging as a sole method for the morphological and functional evaluation of live kidney donors.

Objective: To evaluate gadolinium-enhanced dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the sole method for the anatomical and functional assessment of potential live-kidney donors.

Subjects And Methods: The study included 50 consecutive kidney donors; in addition to routine donor evaluation, the kidney was imaged with Gd-enhanced dynamic MRI, which was also used for selectively determining the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of each kidney. All donors had a m99Tc-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) renal scan as the reference standard to measure GFR.

Routine insertion of ureteral stent in live-donor renal transplantation: is it worthwhile?

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of the routine use of double-J stents in live-donor renal transplantation at a single institute from a prospective randomized study.

Methods: A total of 100 patients were prospectively randomized into two groups of 50 patients each. Group 1 received a routine double-J silicone ureteral stent and group 2 did not.

Impact of Rh(D) blood group system on graft function and survival in live-donor kidney transplantation: a single-institution experience.

One thousand five hundred consecutive live-donor renal transplants were performed in a single institution. Among these patients, 1,372 patients (group I) received Rh-identical allografts and 128 (group II) received Rh-nonidentical allografts. The two groups were homogenous apart from the prevalence of the Rh nonidentity among unrelated donor-recipient pairs.

Effect of the use of internal iliac artery for renal transplantation on penile vascularity and erectile function: a prospective study.

Purpose: We determined the effects of the use of internal iliac artery for renal transplantation on erectile function and penile hemodynamics in prospective fashion.

Materials And Methods: The study comprised 50 patients with chronic renal failure on hemodialysis without associated vascular risk factors. All patients were evaluated before and after renal transplantation with 6-month followup.

We report a case of recent onset headache, sudden mono-ocular blindness and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate as a manifestation of leptomeningeal metastasis from undiagnosed carcinoma of the breast, mimicking temporal arteritis.

Resin bonding to sclerotic, noncarious, cervical lesions.

Noncarious, cervical, wedge-shaped, sclerotic lesions are commonly encountered in clinical practice. In such lesions, dentin has been pathologically altered, often resulting in partial or complete obliteration of the dentinal tubules. These lesions are known to respond to etching and bonding differently from normal dentin, leading to complications during clinical treatment.
