The prevalence of CKD (844 M patients) is higher than that of diabetes mellitus (422 M patients), cancer (42 M patients), and HIV (37 M patients), but people are often less aware of it. Global expert groups predict reductions in the nephrology workforce in the next decade, with a declining interest in nephrology careers.

Introduction: Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a rare but potentially life-threatening urinary tract infection characterized by the formation of gas in the renal parenchyma, collecting system, and perinephric tissue. The condition typically develops in patients with specific predisposing factors such as diabetes mellitus, congenital or acquired obstructive uropathies, or individuals taking immunosuppressive agents. Rarely can the disease occur in patients with other predisposing factors, such as the use of SGLT2 inhibitors, but this is quite uncommon.

The effect of defects, nitrogen doping, and hydrogen saturation on the work function of graphene is investigated via first principle calculations. Whilst Stone-Wales defects have little effect, single and double vacancy defects increase the work function by decreasing charge density in the-electron system. Substitutional nitrogen doping in defect-free graphene significantly decreases the work function, because the nitrogen atoms donate electrons to the-electron system.

Gray zone lymphoma is a very rare liquid malignancy that possesses intersecting features between primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma and classic Hodgkin Lymphoma. In the case presented and accompanying literature review, we will discuss a patient with a chief complaint of shortness of breath and was found to have a mediastinal mass with biopsy consistent with mediastinal gray zone lymphoma. Herein, we explore the historical and recently updated diagnostic criteria of gray zone lymphoma from 2022 as well as the pathophysiology as it pertains to gene expression, while also reviewing the histological findings, epidemiology and treatment modalities.

Using microspherical scaffolds as building blocks to repair bone defects of specific size and shape has been proposed as a tissue engineering strategy. Here, phosphate glass (PG) microcarriers doped with 5 mol % TiO and either 0 mol % CoO (CoO 0%) or 2 mol % CoO (CoO 2%) were investigated for their ability to support osteogenic and vascular responses of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Together with standard culture techniques, cell-material interactions were studied using a novel perfusion microfluidic bioreactor that enabled cell culture on microspheres, along with automated processing and screening of culture variables.

Electrowetting is the effect by which the contact angle of a droplet exposed to a surface charge is modified. Electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) exploits the dielectric properties of thin insulator films to enhance the charge density and hence boost the electrowetting effect. The presence of charges results in an electrically induced spreading of the droplet which permits purposeful manipulation across a hydrophobic surface.

Methanogens are putatively ancestral autotrophs that reduce CO with H to form biomass using a membrane-bound, proton-motive Fe(Ni)S protein called the energy-converting hydrogenase (Ech). At the origin of life, geologically sustained H gradients across inorganic barriers containing Fe(Ni)S minerals could theoretically have driven CO reduction by H through vectorial chemistry in a similar way to Ech. pH modulation of the redox potentials of H, CO and Fe(Ni)S minerals could in principle enable an otherwise endergonic reaction.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microfluidic devices have become promising platforms for a wide range of applications. Here we report a simple method for immobilising histidine-tagged enzymes suitable for PMMA microfluidic devices. The 1-step-immobilisation described is based on the affinity of the His-tag/Ni-NTA interaction and does not require prior amination of the PMMA surface, unlike many existing protocols.

To prepare a biosynthetic module in an infochemical communication project, we designed a silicon/glass microreactor with anti-adsorption polyelectrolyte multilayer coating and immobilized alcohol acetyl transferase (atf), one of the key biosynthetic enzymes of the pheromone of Spodoptera littoralis, on agarose beads inside. The system reproduces the last step of the biosynthesis in which the precursor diene alcohol (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienol is transformed into the major component (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate. The scope of this study was to analyze and implement a multilayer, anti-adsorption coating based on layer-by-layer deposition of polyethylenimine/dextransulfate sodium salt (PEI/DSS).

The diagnosis of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) can be challenging, owing to the absence of traditional lineage-specific markers, but is facilitated by CD4/CD56 co-expression and frequent skin involvement. Herein, we present our collective experiences with three BPDCN cases lacking cutaneous presentation and the inherent diagnostic pitfalls. Taken in context of similar historical cases, we suggest that BPDCN with "leukemic" presentation (L-BPDCN) otherwise presents no major distinguishing features and is at least as aggressive as its cutaneous-involved BPDCN counterpart.

Background: The authors evaluated the utility of immunofluorescence staining with an antipromyelocytic leukemia (anti-PML) antibody for patients with a suspected diagnosis of new or relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and correlated the findings with the results of other established diagnostic modalities.

Aims: Neural (N)-cadherin belongs to a group of transmembrane molecules with a crucial role in tissue morphogenesis and maintenance of an epithelioid phenotype and increased N-cadherin expression is implicated in tumour progression and dedifferentiation. The aim was to determine whether evaluation of N-cadherin in pulmonary tumours might assist in identifying lesions with more aggressive potential.

Methods And Results: One hundred and fifty-five pulmonary lesions were analysed for N-cadherin expression using immunohistochemistry, including neuroendocrine hyperplasia (n = 3), typical carcinoid (n = 59), atypical carcinoid (n = 12), small cell lung carcinoma (n = 11), large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (n = 12), adenocarcinoma (n = 35) and squamous cell carcinoma (n = 23).
