Twelve clinically healthy and sexually mature New Zealand White rabbits were studied. The non-contrast imaging included T1-weighted and T2-weighted spin-echo and gradient-echo sequences in the transverse, sagittal and dorsal planes. Transverse MRI (T2-weighted image) through L1 demonstrated only the right kidney.

In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey aimed at assessing the diversity of yeast species inhabiting the guts of various insect species collected mainly from two Bulgarian National Parks, namely, Rila, and Pirin. The insect specimens encompass a broad taxonomic spectrum, including representatives from Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Dermaptera, Isopoda, and Collembola. Yeast strains were identified with DNA barcoding using the ribosomal markers, specifically, the D1/D2 domains of the ribosomal large subunit (LSU) and the internal transcribed spacers regions ITS 1 + 2 (ITS).

Article Synopsis
  • There are few documented cases of liver tumors in chinchillas, despite their common use in research, prompting a study of their liver anatomy using CT and 3D imaging techniques.
  • The study involved 12 healthy chinchillas, and the researchers identified various anatomical features of the liver, including specific lobes and their relations to other organs.
  • The CT imaging provided high-resolution data and detailed insights into the liver's structure, which could inform future morphological and imaging research on this species.

The prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in the Bulgarian population remains underestimated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate age and gender trends in HEV prevalence in the heterogeneous Bulgarian population. Stored serum samples from blood donors and different patient sub-populations-kidney recipients (KR), patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), Lyme disease (LD), patients with liver involvement and a clinical diagnosis other than viral hepatitis A and E (non-AE), hemodialysis (HD) and HIV-positive patients (HIV)-were retrospectively investigated for markers of past and recent/ongoing HEV infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Anatomical MRI is effective for examining soft tissue in the pelvic cavity, particularly for studying the bulbourethral glands in rabbits.
  • The study involved twelve healthy male rabbits, optimizing MRI protocols using tunnel MRI equipment and focusing on T2-weighted sequences for better contrast in imaging.
  • Findings suggest the high anatomical contrast at T2-weighted imaging highlights glandular secretions, providing valuable insights for clinical practice and reproductive studies.

Yeasts are ubiquitous in temperate forests. While this broad habitat is well-defined, the yeasts inhabiting it and their life cycles, niches, and contributions to ecosystem functioning are less understood. Yeasts are present on nearly all sampled substrates in temperate forests worldwide.

Objectives: To analyze the recurrence rate of placenta-mediated diseases (PMDs) such as preeclampsia (PE) and/or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), and placental abruption (PA) in high-risk patients on antithrombotic therapy (AT) because of a previous obstetrical history for such complications.

Methods: The study group (SG) included 150 patients to whom either 100 mg of aspirin or low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was administered due to a previous history of PMDs. The AT in the SG was started before 16 gestational weeks (g.

Aim: Our study objectives were to evaluate umbilical cord blood acid-base balance in presence of nuchal cord at delivery, effects of nuchal cord at delivery on perinatal outcomes and incidence of nuchal cord in a racially diverse population.

Methods: Perinatal records of 2530 women (predominantly African American and Hispanic) who delivered in 2012 were examined. Perinatal outcomes of women who delivered a baby with nuchal cord were compared with those without nuchal cord.

Aim: To analyze pregnancy outcome in patients who were on antithrombotic medication (AM) because of previous pregnancy with fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

Materials And Methods: The studied group (SG) included 21 pregnancies in 15 women with history of previous IUGR. The patients were on low dose aspirin (LDA) and/or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).

During a yeast biodiversity survey conducted in 2009-2011 in Bulgaria (South Eastern Europe) five strains of a novel ascomycetous yeast species were isolated from the beetle Valgus hemipterus (Cetoniinae) collected from two localities, namely Osogovska Planina Mountain and Nature Park Zlatni Pyasatsi. Phylogenetic analysis using combined sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) and the internal transcribed spacers 1 + 2 regions (ITS1+2) placed the novel species on a separate branch near the basal part of the Lodderomyces clade. The novel species has a unique ascospore morphology distinct from those of the closely related teleomorphic genus Lodderomyces.

Aim: To analyze current practices in Bulgaria regarding antithrombotic medication (AM) during pregnancy, and to compare them with the ones recommended in literature.

Materials And Methods: In 84 pregnant women who were low dose aspirin (LDA) or/and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or unfractionated heparin (UH), data about AM were collected and analyzed. A descriptive analysis was performed of the indications for AM, its type, the applied doses and therapeutic regimens.

Background: Non-adherence is a major obstacle with long-term daily statin therapy.

Objective: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients with hyperlipidemia during an 8-year period in a private internal medicine practice. Periodic dosing was negotiated following several patients' refusal of statin therapy because of muscle aches or cost.

Fragile X syndrome is a neuro-developmental disease caused by transcriptional inactivation of the gene FMR1 (fragile X mental retardation 1) and loss of its protein product FMRP. FMRP has multiple neuronal functions which are implemented together with other proteins. To better understand these functions, the aim of this study was to reveal new protein interactors of dFMRP.

Catheter associated urinary tract infections are common during hospitalization due to the formation of bacterial biofilms on the indwelling device. In this study, we report an innovative biotechnology-based approach for the covalent functionalization of silicone catheters with antifouling zwitterionic moieties to prevent biofilm formation. Our approach combines the potential bioactivity of a natural phenolics layer biocatalytically conjugated to sulfobetaine-acrylic residues in an enzymatically initiated surface radical polymerization with laccase.

Whipple's disease is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain that may be confused with inflammatory bowel disease. We report a Whipple's case misdiagnosed as Crohn's disease in which treatment with anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy led to nearly fatal progression. Lymph node tissue obtained during laparotomy for suspected bowel necrosis stained dramatically with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), and electron microscopy showed a bacterium consistent with Trophyrema whipplei.

Images of the levator hiatus in 40 nulliparous, 40 asymptomatic parous women and 40 women with pelvic organ prolapse were obtained by transperineal/translabial three-dimentional ultrasonography of the pelvic floor. Volumes were taken at rest and during squeezing. Recontructed images of the levator hiatus at the plane of minimal dimentions were obtained by off-line processing of the stored volumes.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a new and promising tool for therapy of autoimmune disorders. In recent years their possibility to take part in the modulation of the immune response is discussed. The exact mechanisms for immunoregulation realized by MSCs are not clear yet, but interactions with other immunoregulatory cells may be involved in this process.
