The effect of metronomic versus standard chemotherapy on the regulatory to effector T-cell equilibrium in cancer patients.

Background: The host's immune system is crucially involved in cancer development and progression. The ratio of regulatory to effector T-cells, as well as the interplay of T-cells with therapeutic agents, impact on cancer prognosis. The current study aimed to comparatively investigate the effect of metronomic and standard chemotherapy on the number and functionality of peripheral regulatory and effector T-cells in cancer patients.

Intramedullary spinal cord metastases from atypical small cell lung cancer: a case report and literature review.

Intramedullary spinal cord metastases (ISCM) are usually the result of rapidly progressing systemic malignancy. Lung cancer represents the most common solid tumor associated with the development of ISCM. We describe a 47-year-old female with atypical small cell lung cancer (SCLC) developing ISCM.

Background: The toxicity of platinum-based combinations represents a common problem for patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma. The authors previously reported encouraging efficacy for the combination of carboplatin and gemcitabine in patients considered to be unfit for cisplatin-based treatment. The objective of the current multicenter Phase II study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the combination of gemcitabine and carboplatin as first-line treatment in unselected patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma.

Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma: clinical study of a distinct clinical entity and treatment outcome in 20 patients: review of the literature.

Primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL) is a discrete subset of large B-cell lymphoma with unique clinicopathologic features. The question of optimal treatment emerges because it is an uncommon but not rare occurrence. A retrospective study was therefore conducted in a group of patients in Greece to evaluate the clinical features and treatment outcome in this disease.
