Unlabelled: Artificial degradation is often used to recreate and accelerate the natural aging of plastic for small-scaled simulation experiments assessing their environmental impact. However, current artificial aging methods are rarely compared against reference materials or validated using field-aged samples, creating uncertainties when extrapolating results to naturally aged plastics, making it difficult to place findings in an environmentally applicable context. Therefore, here we compared four accessible, cost-effective, and easily replicable methods (heat, UVA, and UVC irradiance at two intensities) to produce artificially degraded materials.

Following this approach, this work focuses on four endemic lizard taxa, namely Acanthodactylus schreiberi schreiberi, Ophisops elegans schlueteri, Phoenicolacerta troodica, and Laudakia cypriaca, that co-occur in Cyprus, an isolated island of the Mediterranean. In an attempt to discern possible effects of the geological and ecological history of the region on diversity patterns along the lineages under study, samples were collected from all parts of Cyprus, and phylogenetic reconstructions, species delimitation analyses, and biogeographic comparisons were conducted at both genetic and genomic levels (Sanger and ddRAD sequencing data, respectively) for all four taxa.

Recent studies have demonstrated that MPs may not always have negative effects, and in contrast, several species of Tenebrionidae beetles utilized plastic as a food source in controlled laboratory experiments. However, most studies of plastic-eating insects have not been ecologically realistic, and thus it is unclear whether results from these experiments apply more broadly.

Its overexpression in various cancer types has led to its recognition as an important marker for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this work, we compare two approaches for the immunochemical detection of survivin through surface-enhanced fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy using surfaces with nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles in the form of dendrites or aggregates as immunoassays substrates.

The actions of this pathogen on skeletal muscle remain poorly understood. In skeletal muscle, mitochondria serve as a crucial energy source, which may be perturbed by infection.

To this end, surfaces with silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles in the form of dendrites or aggregates were evaluated as substrates for the immunochemical detection of two ovarian cancer indicators, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) and human epididymis protein 4 (HE4). The substrates were prepared by metal-enhanced chemical etching of silicon wafers to create, in one step, silicon nanowires and silver nanoparticles on top of them.

Introduction: Organ shortage, subsequent use of extended donor criteria organs and high-risk recipients needing redo-surgery are increasing the complexity of heart transplantation. Donor organ machine perfusion (MP) is an emerging technology allowing reduction of ischemia time as well as standardized evaluation of the organ. The aim of this study was to review the introduction of MP and analyze the results of heart transplantation after MP in our center.

Nevertheless, the necessity of these measures has been doubted, especially after vaccines and antiviral treatment became available. Here, we present the burden of COVID-19 infection in LTCFs during the first 9 months of 2022 across Greece.

Different structures with Ag-aggregates as well as Ag-dendrites were fabricated and studied depending on the etching parameters. Moreover, the addition of Au nanoparticles by simple drop-casting on the MACE-treated surfaces can enhance the photoluminescence significantly, and the structures have shown a Limit of Detection of Rhodamine 6G down to 10-12 M for the case of the Ag-dendrites enriched with Au nanoparticles.

Although their determination is usually performed in blood serum, saliva is gaining ground as the biological fluid of choice for oxidative stress determination at the point of need. For this purpose, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which is a highly sensitive method for the detection of biomolecules, could offer additional advantages regarding the analysis of biological fluids at the point of need.

A femtosecond laser pulse is used to create a temporally localized wave packet through multiphoton absorption at a well defined phase of a synchronized THz field. By recording the photoelectron momentum distributions as a function of the time delay, we observe signatures of various regimes of dynamics, ranging from recollision-free acceleration to coherent electron-ion scattering induced by the THz field.

Despite the great effort dedicated on describing taxonomic diversity of Oniscidea, mainly employing morphology, there is still a considerable number of species/genera of uncertain generic/familiar assignment. Based on different morphological characters, alternative evolutionary relationships have been proposed to describe the diversity of Oniscidea at different phylogenetic levels.

Objective: Drugs affecting dopaminergic neurotransmission may exert toxic and beneficial effects that persist after discontinuation by modulating gene expression in key brain regions. Drug addiction, cravings and the tardive symptoms associated with chronic exposure to antipsychotics are among the most common processes attributed to long-term dopaminergic neurotoxicity. The purpose of this review was to investigate the mechanisms of dopaminergic neurotoxicity induced by neuroleptic drugs, dopamine agonists, levodopa, stimulants and known dopaminergic neurotoxins MATERIALS AND METHODS: A PubMed search for each of the dopaminergic compounds in question was carried out.
