The aim of the present study is to highlight the effect of two commonly used plastics, polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), on the quality and health indices of soil. To this end, a pot experiment was carried out using two soils, one acidic and one alkaline. The soil samples were collected from rural areas of central and Northern Greece and had similar particle size composition and almost equal copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) concentrations.

Bio-based polymers such as poly(lactic acid), PLA, are facing increased use in everyday plastic packaging, imposing challenges in the recycling process of its counterpart polyester poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET. This work presents the exploration of the properties of PET/PLA blends with raw materials obtained from recycled plastics. Several blends were prepared, containing 50 to 90% PET.

Functional groups in a monomer molecule usually play an important role during polymerization by enhancing or decreasing the reaction rate due to the possible formation of side bonds. The situation becomes more complicated when polymerization takes place in the presence of graphene oxide since it also includes functional groups in its surface. Aiming to explore the role of functional groups on polymerization rate, the in situ bulk radical polymerization of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) in the presence or not of graphene oxide was investigated.
