Eco-Friendly and COVID-19 Friendly? Decreasing the Carbon Footprint of the Operating Room in the COVID-19 Era.

Surgery is one of the most energy-intensive branches of healthcare. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced surgical volumes, infection control protocols have increased the ecological footprint of surgery owing to the extensive use of personal protective equipment, sanitation, testing and isolation resources. The burden of environmental diseases requiring surgical care, the international commitment towards environmental sustainability and the global efforts to return to the pre-pandemic surgical workflow call for action towards climate-friendly surgery.

Deficiency of hydrogen sulfide production and pregnancy rate in an experimental model: Association with preterm delivery.

Problem: Pro-inflammatory phenomena drive preterm delivery (PTD). Hydrogen sulfide is a gasotransmitter with anti-inflammatory properties produced through the activity of the enzyme cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE), and its impact was studied in models of normal delivery and PTD in mice.

Method Of Study: Female CSE and CSE mice were mated with male CSE mice; mating was done with drinking water unsupplemented and supplemented with cysteine.

Effects of endocrine disrupting compounds on female fertility.

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds or Chemicals (EDCs) constitute an extensive and varied group of mostly non-natural chemicals that have the ability to imitate any aspect of hormone action, perturbing many physiological functions in humans and animals. As for female fertility, several EDCs are associated with adverse effects in the regulation of steroidogenesis, higher miscarriage rates as well as lower fertilization and embryo implantation rates and some of them are considered to decrease the number of high-quality embryos in assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancy. The most common EDCs are pesticides, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and especially phthalates and bisphenols which are used in thousands of products as plasticizers.

Cold-Water Immersion and Sports Massage Can Improve Pain Sensation but Not Functionality in Athletes with Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of cold-water immersion (CWI) and sports massage on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in amateur athletes. Sixty male amateur athletes were randomised into four equal groups ( = 15) receiving either CWI, sports massage, their combination, or served as controls after applying plyometric training to their lower extremities. The main outcomes measures were pain, exertion, rectus femoris perimeter, knee flexion range of motion, knee extensors isometric strength and serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels examined before the plyometric training, immediately after the treatment, and 24, 48 and 72 h post exercise.

Migration and newborn screening: time to build on the European Asylum, Integration and Migration Fund?

Purpose: The authors discuss the need for newborn screening in the context of the migration policy of the European Union, and particularly, the European Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

Methods: The authors searched scholarly databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Google scholar) and grey literature (LexEuropa, Policy reports) to identify original peer-reviewed research examining the migration to the European Union and the provision of healthcare to infants born to refugees and immigrant mothers. Resources in language different from English, French, German and Greek were not taken into consideration.

Single Dose Comparative Bioavailability Study of Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate as Oral Solution Versus Reference Hard Capsules in Healthy Volunteers.

Lisdexamfetamine is an inactive prodrug of dexamfetamine that is used for the second-line treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and moderate to severe binge eating disorder (BED). Once in the blood, the prodrug is hydrolyzed in erythrocyte cytosol, thus releasing the active dexamfetamine. We here present a fully validated HPLC-MS/MS analytical method for simultaneous determination of lisdexamfetamine and dexamfetamine in human plasma and the first published comparative bioavailability study of lisdexamfetamine including a GMP finished product formulated as oral solution.
