We previously observed lifelong endurance exercise (LLE) influenced quadriceps whole-muscle and myofiber size in a fiber-type and sex-specific manner. The current follow-up exploratory investigation examined myofiber size regulators and myofiber size distribution in vastus lateralis biopsies from these same LLE men (n = 21, 74 ± 1 years) and women (n = 7, 72 ± 2 years) as well as old, healthy nonexercisers (OH; men: n = 10, 75 ± 1 years; women: n = 10, 75 ± 1 years) and young exercisers (YE; men: n = 10, 25 ± 1 years; women: n = 10, 25 ± 1 years). LLE exercised ~5 days/week, ~7 h/week for the previous 52 ± 1 years.

Background: Oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is an objective physiological measure that can be obtained from a standard graded exercise test. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding sex differences in OUES values in children. Therefore, this study investigated potential sex differences in absolute, ratio-scaled, and allometrically scaled OUES in 8.

We assessed the feasibility of the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) human adult clinical exercise protocols, while also documenting select cardiovascular, metabolic, and molecular responses to these protocols. After phenotyping and familiarization sessions, 20 subjects (25 ± 2 yr, 12 M, 8 W) completed an endurance exercise bout ( = 8, 40 min cycling at 70% V̇o), a resistance exercise bout ( = 6, ∼45 min, 3 sets of ∼10 repetition maximum, 8 exercises), or a resting control period ( = 6, 40 min rest). Blood samples were taken before, during, and after (10 min, 2 h, and 3.

Purpose: This study examined metabolic flexibility with respect to fat metabolism during exercise in children who are lean (n=11; 10.9[0.9] y) and overweight/obese (OW/OB; n=9; 10.

Background: Resistance exercise provides an effective stimulus for improving the metabolic plasticity of skeletal muscle, and the type of acute muscle contraction plays an important role in determining specific responses and adaptations. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the effect of contraction order on metabolic responses by comparing monophasic concentric and eccentric squats versus a protocol incorporating alternated concentric and eccentric repetitions.

Methods: Twelve recreationally active men (21.
