  • Frequent blood transfusions in thalassemia major patients increase their risk of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs), necessitating effective screening protocols for donor blood.
  • A study in central India examined 66 multi-transfused thalassemia patients, revealing sero-prevalence rates of 3.0% for hepatitis B, 18.2% for hepatitis C, and 1.5% for HIV, with no cases of syphilis detected.
  • The findings suggest a significant burden of hepatitis C among these patients, highlighting the need to improve blood screening methods and ensure better quality control in blood donation.
