Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine the prevalence of azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus strains from clinical and environmental sources in Turkey, involving 21 centers over a 16-month period.
  • - A total of 1.3% of environmental isolates and 3.3% of clinical isolates showed azole resistance, with specific TR34/L98H mutations found in nearly half of the resistant samples.
  • - Although the overall rate of azole resistance was low, the presence of wild-type cyp51A in over half of the strains suggests that other resistance mechanisms may be developing.

Objectives: spp. are clinically important pathogens that cause difficulties for treatment by biofilm formation. Considering antifungal resistance rates and the limitations in the discovery of new antifungals, the antifungal and antibiofilm effects of various drugs used for different therapeutic purposes are becoming more important.

Background: Echinocandin resistance rarely occurs in clinical Candida parapsilosis isolates and the underlying mechanism is unknown.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of echinocandin resistance and the underlying mechanism for a large collection of C. parapsilosis blood isolates and to determine whether the echinocandin-resistant isolates were clonally related.

Article Synopsis
  • Candidemia caused by specific fungi is now the fourth leading cause of infection in Turkey, with an increase in azole-non-susceptible (ANS) strains prompting a study to assess antifungal susceptibility.
  • A study of 161 blood isolates revealed that while most were still susceptible to echinocandins and amphotericin B, 18.6% exhibited ANS characteristics, and 52 showed high fluconazole tolerance (HFT).
  • Patients with ANS and HFT infections had higher rates of therapeutic failure, highlighting a concerning rise in resistant strains and the need for public health interventions in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • * About 27% of these isolates were FLZR, with many harboring mutations that contribute to their resistance, particularly the Y132F mutation, which is linked to higher mortality and lower biofilm production.
  • * The study compared two typing methods for identifying FLZR clonal relationships, finding that microsatellite typing (MST) is more effective than amplified fragment length polymorphism typing (AFLP) in outbreak scenarios.

Objectives: Candida species are among the most important causes of hospital acquired blood borne infections, and with high rates of mortality and morbidity, these infections are still a major problem today. History of gastrointestinal surgery, administration of total parenteral nutrition and/or wide spectrum antibiotics and immune suppression following organ transplantations are considered serious risk factors for these infections. This study aimed to evaluate the patients from our general surgery department with diagnosed candidemia; by means of strain, treatment and prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined antifungal resistance rates in Candida spp. isolates from 1997-2017 across 12 tertiary-care centers in Turkey.
  • A total of 1991 isolates were tested for susceptibility to various antifungal drugs using standard methods, finding mostly low resistance rates overall.
  • Notably, fluconazole resistance was observed in C. parapsilosis SC and C. glabrata SC at rates of 7.7% and 0.9%, respectively, with significant variability in resistance levels across different centers, prompting the need for further research.

Background/aim: Clinicians often neglect fungal infections and do not routinely investigate deep tissue from the wound for fungal culture and sensitivity due to insufficient information in the literature. In this study, we aimed to evaluate fungal etiology of invasive fungal diabetic foot which is rarely reported in the literature.

Materials And Methods: The patients who were unresponsive to antibiotic therapy and those with positive fungal in bone or deep tissue culture were enrolled in the study.

Objectives: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in children with hematological malignancies. The monitoring of serum galactomannan (GM) antigen is considered useful in the diagnosis of IA . The aim of this study was to determine the utility of serum GM monitoring in the early diagnosis of IA and the role of positive antigenemia in the management of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Acremonium species are saprophytic molds widely distributed in nature, existing in soil and decaying vegetation. Penetrating wounds, intravascular catheters and immunosuppression are risk factors for invasive infections of Acremonium. The fungus can also cause cutaneous infections and mycetoma in the immunocompetent; such infections occur in extremities open to trauma.

Adenoviruses are responsible for a broad spectrum of diseases, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections (URTIs and LRTIs, respectively), conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and hemorrhagic cystitis. The aim of this study was to determine the adenovirus (AdV) types isolated from clinical specimens by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing methods. A total of 22 AdV strains isolated between January 1st 2011 to May 31th 2011, from various samples (295 nasopharyngeal swabs, 42 conjunctival swabs, 13 stool) sent to our routine virology laboratory were included in the study.

Mucormycosis is a rare and often fatal invasive fungal infection. Disseminated or pulmonary forms are common in patients with immune deficiency while rhinocerebral form is common in diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the adult mucormycosis cases which were followed up in our hospital between 2007-2010.

Objectives: This study describes the in-situ gelling of econazole nitrate containing thermosensitive polymers composed of poloxamer 407 and 188 as a novel treatment platform for vaginal candidiasis.

Methods: Aqueous thermosensitive formulations containing 1% of econazole nitrate and poloxamer 407 and/or 188 were prepared and their rheological, mechanical and drug-release properties determined at 20 ± 0.1°C and/or 37 ± 0.

The main objective of this work was to develop antifungal matrix tablet for vaginal applications using mucoadhesive thiolated polymer. Econazole nitrate (EN) and miconazole nitrate (MN) were used as antifungal drugs to prepare the vaginal tablet formulations. Thiolated poly(acrylic acid)-cysteine (PAA-Cys) conjugate was synthesized by the covalent attachment of L-cysteine to PAA with the formation of amide bonds between the primary amino group of L-cysteine and the carboxylic acid group of the polymer.

Candida species that show an increasing number of clinical and/or microbiological resistance to several antifungals and are the most common agents of invasive fungal infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro susceptibility of Candida blood isolates to antifungal agents (amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, and voriconazole) by comparative use of the CLSI reference microdilution method and Etest. Four hundred Candida blood isolates (215 Candida albicans, 185 non-albicans Candida strains) were included in the study.

In some multidrug therapy programs, ketoconazole (KTZ) may be administered with some antacids that could modify its dissolution rate and reduce its absorption, thus leading to therapeutic failures. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO on this interaction in comparison with commercial KTZ tablets. The second aim was to prepare lipid granules of KTZ that could be an alternative to the commercial formulation.

Caspofungin is a promising echinocandin-group antifungal agent used especially in the treatment of resistant invasive aspergillosis. The guidelines for in vitro susceptibility testing of Aspergillus species against caspofungin are not described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The minimum inhibitory concentration that showed a prominent reduction of growth (MIC-2) and minimum effective concentration (MEC) endpoints are frequently used for the susceptibility testing of caspofungin as MIC determination criteria.
