Article Synopsis
  • The research focuses on using enzyme-hydrolysis of Acalypha hispida plant leaves to create nanocellulose, showcasing its eco-friendly and biocompatible benefits.
  • The enzyme used, xylanase, was sourced from Bacillus pumilus and shown to effectively hydrolyze xylan, leading to the successful synthesis of enzyme-hydrolyzed nanocellulose (EHNC).
  • The produced EHNC has desirable properties like small particle size (15-40 nm) and low production cost, indicating its potential for efficient and sustainable applications in advanced materials.

Background: Though treatable, osteoporosis continues as a substantially underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. Bone mineral density (BMD) monitoring will definitely aid in the prediction and prevention of medical emergencies arising from osteoporosis. Although quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is one of the most widely accepted tools for measuring BMD, it lacks the contribution of bone architecture in predicting BMD, which is significant as aging progresses.

This research highlights the synergistic use of carbon black (CB) and chitin nanofibers (CHNFs) for developing green tyres for the first time. The CHNFs (12-30 nm) were prepared from chitin powder with the help of steam explosion and mild oxalic acid hydrolysis. The CHNFs were uniformly dispersed in natural rubber (NR) latex, dried, and mixed with CB in a two-roll mill to form NR/CB/CHNF composites.

Patients with diabetes who are closely monitored have a higher overall quality of life than those who are not. Costs associated with healthcare can be decreased by utilising the Internet of Things (IoT), thanks to technological advancements. To satisfy the expectations of e-health applications, it is required for the development of the intelligent systems as well as increases the number of applications that are connected to the network.

Background: Chikungunya is a globally spreading infectious arboviral disease transmitted from a diurnal bite of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus Mosquitoes. It is a disease with sporadic outbreaks. It is now resurfacing in South East Asia especially in India, where it is found to have high mortality and morbidity and presenting with atypical presentation, especially with the neurotropic presentation.

Importance: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) causes an immunosuppressed state and increases risk of secondary infections like mucormycosis. We evaluated clinical features, predisposing factors, diagnosis and outcomes for mucormycosis among patients with COVID-19 infection.

Methods: This prospective, observational, multi-centre study included 47 consecutive patients with mucormycosis, diagnosed during their course of COVID-19 illness, between January 3 and March 27, 2021.

Aim: The aim of the current study was to explore the effectiveness of locally-delivered 1% metformin (MtF) and Aloe vera (AV) gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) in the treatment of intrabony defects in chronic periodontitis patients.

Methods: A total of 90 volunteers were randomly assigned to three treatment groups: (a) SRP + placebo gel; (b) SRP + 1% MtF gel; and (c) SRP + AV gel. Clinical parameters, including gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BoP), pocket probing depth (PPD), and clinical attachment level (CAL), were recorded at baseline, and 6 and 12 months.

Aim: Alendronate (ALN) has antiresorptive and osteostimulative properties. The major component of aloe vera (AV) gel is acemannan, which has been found to have osteogenic properties. The aim of the present study is to explore the effectiveness of 1% ALN and AV gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in chronic periodontitis patients with class II furcation defects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on microbiological surveillance data and antibiotic sensitivity patterns for infectious disease management at a tertiary care center in Western India over four years.
  • It retrospectively analyzes culture reports from various clinical samples, excluding respiratory secretions, to observe trends in nosocomial infections and microbial behavior.
  • Results indicate an increase in Staphylococcus as the primary pathogen in bloodstream infections, with significant antibiotic sensitivity observed in gram-negative isolates, suggesting specific antibiotics as suitable empirical treatments.

Four cationic lipids (1-4) with oligo-oxyethylene units at the linkage region between the pseudoglyceryl backbone and the hydrocarbon chains have been synthesized. Two of these lipids (1 and 2) have an equal number of (CH(2)CH(2)O)(n)() units attached to both C-1 and C-2 positions of the pseudoglyceryl backbone, making their linkage regions similar, while the other two (3 and 4) are unsymmetrical in terms of the number of oxyethylene units in the linkage. Synthesis of lipids 1 and 2 involved the coupling of benzyl glycerol with the corresponding tosylates as a key step.

Four novel cationic lipids with different numbers of oxyethylene units at the linkage region between the pseudoglyceryl backbone and the hydrocarbon chains have been synthesized and used as mixtures with 1,2-dioleoyl-L-alpha-glycero-3-phosphatidyl ethanolamine (DOPE) for liposome-mediated gene transfection. Incorporation of different numbers of oxyethylene (-CH(2)CH(2)O-) units between long hydrocarbon chain at the C-1 and C-2 positions of the pseudoglyceryl skeleton improved the transfection efficiency considerably compared to the one in which the chains were connected via simple ether links. A pronounced improvement in the gene transfer efficiency was observed with the unsymmetrical cationic lipid 3 in which the long hydrocarbon at the C-1 position of the pseudoglyceryl segment is connected via two (-CH(2)CH(2)O-) units.

We report here a case of recurrent hematuria in a young man who presented with deteriorating renal function due to interstitial nephritis, secondary to, probably enteric fever. Immunofluorescence studies showed IgA nephropathy and ultrastructural studies revealed thin basement membrane nephropathy.
