Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been reported to be associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. The aim of this study was to investigate atrial electromechanical couplings in patients with OSA and the relationship between these parameters and P-wave dispersion (Pd).

Methods: One hundred twenty-six patients were enrolled in this study.

Beliefs about cervical cancer screening among Turkish married women.

Cervical cancer can be prevented by having a Pap test aiming for early screening. This study was planned to determine the beliefs of women about cervical cancer and the influencing factors. The cross-sectional study was conducted in Sarıyer, one of the most densely populated districts of Istanbul, which is the most crowded city in Turkey.

The effect of mud pack therapy on serum YKL-40 and hsCRP levels in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of treatment with mud pack in knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to determine whether mud pack effects serum levels of YKL-40 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) which are reported to be biological markers for articular damage or inflammation in patients with OA. Forty-four patients with the diagnosis of knee OA assigned into two groups were treated with local natural mineral-rich mud pack or hot pack. Treatments were applied for 6 days a week for 2 weeks as a total of 12 sessions.

Brucella glomerulonephritis and prosthetic valve endocarditis: a case report.

Although brucellosis is an endemic disease in Mediterranean countries, there are few reported cases of Brucella endocarditis and glomerulonephritis. We report a case of Brucella prosthetic mitral valve endocarditis and glomerulonephritis that could be managed by using only antibiotic therapy, including rifampicin, doxycycline and ceftriaxone, without a surgical procedure.

Assessment of atrial conduction time in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Objectives: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder resulting in multisystemic inflammatory damage. Recent articles report that 20% to 30% of deaths in patients with SLE have cardiovascular origin. The aim of this study was to investigate the atrial conduction time in patients with SLE by using high-usefulness tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDI).

Acute effects of passive smoking on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function in healthy volunteers.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of passive smoking on left ventricular (LV) function in healthy volunteers.

Methods: Sixty-one healthy nonsmoking volunteers were enrolled in this study. LV M-mode, two-dimensional, conventional Doppler, and color tissue Doppler echocardiography were performed, and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels were obtained from subjects before and immediately after exposure to passive smoking for 30 min in a smoking room.

Effect of long-term and high-dose allopurinol therapy on endothelial function in normotensive diabetic patients.

Objectives: Endothelial dysfunction is a well known risk factor for atherosclerosis. Uric acid levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis even if in physiological range. Xanthine oxidase inhibition with allopurinol decreases uric acid levels and oxidative stress and improves endothelial function.

Relationship between mean platelet volume levels and subclinical target organ damage in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.

Background: Significant numbers of asymptomatic hypertensive patients are attacked by subclinical target organ damage (TOD) such as proteinuria, left ventricular hypertrophy and carotid atherosclerosis. Platelets become activated in uncontrolled hypertension and play a crucial role in increased thrombotic tendency. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is one of the markers that correlate closely with platelet activity.

Fatal pulmonary oedema following oxytocin administration in a pregnant woman with acute myocardial infarction.

Acute myocardial infarction is a rare event in pregnant patients. Mechanical valves are naturally thrombogenic and require careful anticoagulation. Pregnancy produces a hypercoagulable situation and necessitates close follow-up in pregnant patients with mechanical heart valves.

Relationship between L-arginine/asymmetric dimethylarginine, homocysteine, folic acid, vitamin B levels, and coronary artery ectasia.

Background: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is characterized by an abnormal dilatation of the coronary arteries. The ratio of L-arginine/asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and homocysteine are important factors for endothelial function. In this study, we investigate the ratio of L-arginine/ADMA, homocysteine, and folic acid/vitamin B levels in patients with CAE.

Mean platelet volume predicts embolic complications and prognosis in infective endocarditis.

Objectives: This study was designed to examine the change in mean platelet volume (MPV) over the course of infective endocarditis (IE) and also the association between MPV and complications including embolic events in IE.

Methods: Forty patients (26 male, mean age 46±15 years) who were hospitalized with a diagnosis of IE at the Department of Cardiology, Erciyes University, from March 2005 to August 2008, were retrospectively evaluated. The diagnosis of IE was made clinically and was confirmed with Duke's criteria.

Acanthosis nigricans in a patient with lung cancer: a case report.

Some skin lesions may accompany malignancies. Acanthosis nigricans, one such lesion, is a paraneoplastic dermatosis characterized by hyperpigmented and velvety verrucose plaques observed as symetric eruptions. With this report, we aim to present a rare case of concomitant lung cancer and acanthosis nigricans.

Objects: Carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected of playing a major role in cigarette smoke-induced cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension is one of the common chronic cardiovascular diseases that lead to heart attacks, strokes, chronic heart failure, and chronic renal failure. We aimed to investigate the immediate effects of passive smoking on blood pressure and heart rate during and after exposure in healthy females.

The role of heart-type fatty acid-binding protein in predicting properties of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Introduction: Fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) is an independent predictor of cardiac events. However, the relation between increasing FABP and coronary atherosclerosis is unknown. We have investigated the relation between FABP and angiographic properties of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Short- and long-term results of clinical effectiveness of sodium hyaluronate injection in supraspinatus tendinitis.

The objective of the study is to evaluate the short- and long-term effect of intraarticular sodium hyaluronate (SH) application in patients diagnosed with supraspinatus tendinitis (ST) that have shoulder pain on the clinical symptoms of the patients through comparison with conventional physiotherapy methods.
