Neurological adverse effects of isoxazoline exposure in cats and dogs.

Background: Isoxazolines are rarely reported to be associated with neurological adverse events in cats and dogs, but information about the onset and duration of neurological signs is lacking in the summary of product characteristics of these medicines.

Methods: The Veterinary Poisons Information Service and the Dutch Poisons Information Center databases were searched using the Veterinary Dictionary for Drug-Related Affairs terms for ataxia, muscle tremor, convulsions or hyperesthesia in cats and dogs exposed to isoxazolines.

Results: There were 22 cases with and 57 cases without outcome information, mostly involving fluralaner or sarolaner.

Digoxin-specific antibodies: a novel dosing strategy.

Digoxin-specific antibodies (digoxin-Fabs) are of value in the treatment of a strongly suspected or a known, potentially life-threatening digoxin toxicity. These antibodies are not registered for use in Europe; therefore Dutch hospital pharmacies are not allowed to keep them in stock. In the Netherlands, digoxin-Fabs are stored in a national calamity stock of emergency medicines at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Background: Traumatic acute subdural haematoma is a debilitating condition. Laterality intuitively influences management and outcome. However, in contrast to stroke, this research area is rarely studied.

Incidence of Vitis fruit-induced clinical signs and acute kidney injury in dogs and cats.

Objectives: To determine the incidence of clinical signs and Vitis fruit-induced acute kidney injury in dogs and cats with a Vitis fruit ingestion reported to the Dutch Poisons Information Center, and a description of the therapies instituted by the veterinarians.

Materials And Methods: All cases of Vitis fruit ingestions in dogs and cats reported to the center between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018 were included in this study. Veterinarians and pet owners were contacted by phone or email to obtain follow-up information.

Long-term functional outcome of surgical treatment for degenerative cervical myelopathy.

Objective: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a major global cause of spinal cord dysfunction. Surgical treatment is considered a safe and effective way to improve functional outcome, although information about long-term functional outcome remains scarce despite increasing longevity. The objective of this study was to describe functional outcome 10 years after surgery for DCM.

Intoxication with Ornithogalum arabicum is a potential cause of visual impairment and irreversible blindness in dogs.

We describe two dogs with persistent visual impairment after initially mild intoxication signs following ingestion of plant material. Additionally, a 12-year analysis of the Dutch Poisons Information Centre database additionally reveals that ingestion of plant material can be potentially life-threatening to companion animals. Further studies are necessary to confirm the involvement of cardiac glycoside-like toxins present in and the toxicity of these substances to the retina.

In-hospital costs after severe traumatic brain injury: A systematic review and quality assessment.

Background: The in-hospital treatment of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered to be expensive, especially in patients with severe TBI (s-TBI). To improve future treatment decision-making, resource allocation and research initiatives, this study reviewed the in-hospital costs for patients with s-TBI and the quality of study methodology.

Methods: A systematic search was performed using the following databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, CENTRAL, Emcare, PsychINFO, Academic Search Premier and Google Scholar.

Functional and patient-reported outcome versus in-hospital costs after traumatic acute subdural hematoma (t-ASDH): a neurosurgical paradox?

Background: The decision whether to operate or not in patients with a traumatic acute subdural hematoma (t-ASDH) can, in many cases, be a neurosurgical dilemma. There is a general conception that operating on severe cases leads to the survival of severely disabled patients and is associated with relatively high medical costs. There is however little information on the quality of life of patients after operation for t-ASDH, let alone on the cost-effectiveness.

Comparative Effectiveness of Surgery for Traumatic Acute Subdural Hematoma in an Aging Population.

There is uncertainty as to the optimal initial management of patients with traumatic acute subdural hematoma, leading to regional variation in surgical policy. This can be exploited to compare the effect of various management strategies and determine best practices. This article reports such a comparative effectiveness analysis of a retrospective observational cohort of traumatic acute subdural hematoma patients in two geographically distinct neurosurgical departments chosen for their - a-priori defined - diverging treatment preferences.

Gross total resection of pituitary adenomas after endoscopic vs. microscopic transsphenoidal surgery: a meta-analysis.

Background: Microscopic transsphenoidal surgery (mTSS) is a well-established method to address adenomas of the pituitary gland. Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (eTSS) has become a viable alternative, however. Advocates suggest that the greater illumination, panoramic visualization, and angled endoscopic views afforded by eTSS may allow for higher rates of gross total tumor resection (GTR).

[Bitten by an exotic venomous snake].

Background: Patients who have been bitten by an exotic venomous snake are at risk of severe morbidity and a fatal outcome following an incorrect risk-assessment. Treatment with an antivenom can be necessary and can turn out to be lifesaving. In the Netherlands there are only a few cases of bites from exotic venomous snakes each year.

Sustainability of the good behaviour game in Dutch primary schools.

Sustainability of health promotion programs is essential to maintain their positive effects. However, few studies have examined the extent of program sustainability and the factors influencing it. We examined these issues through the Good Behaviour Game (GBG), a classroom-based program in primary schools with beneficial behavioural and health-related effects that was implemented in 2008.

Lipid Therapy for Intoxications.

This review discusses the use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) in the treatment of intoxications with lipophilic agents in veterinary medicine. Despite growing scientific evidence that ILE has merit in the treatment of certain poisonings, there is still uncertainty on the optimal composition of the lipid emulsion, the dosing, the mechanism of action, and the efficacy. Therefore, a critical view of the clinician on the applicability of this modality in intoxications is still warranted.

Clinical presentation and management of an Aruban rattlesnake bite in the Netherlands.

Bites by Aruban Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus unicolor) are rare and not known to induce severe envenomations. Here, we present a case of a 57 year-old man bitten by his pet Aruban Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus unicolor). He was admitted to hospital within 15 min.

Hypersociability in the behavioral phenotype of 17q21.31 microdeletion syndrome.

The 17q21.31 microdeletion syndrome with its characteristic features including developmental delay, moderate intellectual disability, facial dysmorphisms, and anomalies of the brain and multiple organ systems was recently described. As to its behavioral profile, scarce data from clinical observations have suggested a remarkably amiable, friendly disposition, to some extent comparable to that observed in Angelman and Williams syndromes.

[Practical guidelines for the treatment of cases of adder envenomation in dogs].

Every year, dogs are presented to veterinary clinics in the Netherlands after having been bitten by a viper. The viper is the only venomous snake native to the Netherlands. Clinical signs after an acquired viper bite can range from none (after a 'dry' bite) to very mild up to life threatening following a 'wet' bite.

[Cobalt poisoning due to metal-on-metal hip implants].

Since 2011, cobalt and chromium blood levels are measured in patients with a metal-on-metal hip implant (MoM prosthesis). In this article we discuss the health risks that are related to chronically elevated blood cobalt concentrations induced by abnormal wear and corrosion of the MoM prosthesis. Only a few patients who have systemic symptoms of poisoning, besides local symptoms around the failing MoM prosthesis, have been described in the literature.

Establishment and first experiences of the National Serum Depot in the Netherlands.

Since 2008, a National Serum Depot is operational in the Netherlands, guaranteeing antivenom supply, 24 h per day, during medical emergencies. In this article the organisation structure, choice of antivenoms, problems encountered during the establishment, and the results from establishment in 2008 till December 2011 are discussed. The Serum Depot is organised by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in cooperation with the Dutch National Poisons Information Center.

[Intoxication with Monkshood (Aconitum napellus)].

Three patients presented with an intoxication caused by Aconitum napellus, commonly known as Aconite, Monkshood or Wolfsbane. The first patient, a woman aged 24, was resuscitated after accidental ingestion of plant material 'from nature'. She experienced severe ventricular tachyarrhythmias.
