The Yolo Bypass (YB) is a large flood conveyance system designed to protect the city of Sacramento, California, USA from flooding when the Sacramento River approaches flood stage. The Sacramento River watershed and YB are a source of methylmercury (MeHg) to downstream habitat as a result of historic mercury (Hg) and gold mining practices. In the dry season, the YB is extensively farmed and grazed.

Background: Autologous fractional full-thickness skin grafting is a method of harvesting full-thickness skin with reduced donor site morbidity compared with conventional skin grafting.

Objective: To demonstrate that full-thickness skin microbiopsies can be harvested with minimal scarring or complications.

Materials And Methods: In a nonrandomized, self-controlled, pilot trial, subjects ( n = 8) underwent tissue harvesting of full-thickness skin columns of 200, 400, 500, 600, 800 μm, 1, and 2 mm diameters.

Article Synopsis
  • Laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) is a technique used for medical and cosmetic purposes, but there's a need for better guidelines to help clinicians use it safely and effectively.
  • A comprehensive review of existing studies identified 54 relevant publications that informed new recommendations, which were developed through consensus among a panel of experts.
  • Key findings include that LADD is generally safe for use on various skin types, effective for treating certain skin conditions, and that drug delivery can be optimized through specific techniques, although prophylactic antibiotics are only necessary in certain cases.

Background: The generation of DNA damage by ultra-violet radiations (UV) is well established, and both the nature of the DNA lesions and their respective DNA repair pathways have largely been described. Besides UV rays, visible light constitutes a very important part of the sun spectrum where blue light is considered a significant contributor to premature aging. However, blue light-induced DNA damage has not been deeply explored yet.

This study reports the synthesis and biological investigation of three series of novel monocyclic β-lactam derivatives bearing a morpholine ring substituent on the nitrogen. The resulting β-lactam adducts were synthesized via Staudinger's [2 + 2]-ketene-imine cycloaddition reaction. New synthesized products were fully characterized by spectral data and elemental analyses, and then evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity toward human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cytotoxicity toward HepG2 cell line.

Highly diastereoselective synthesis of chromeno β-lactam hybrids was achieved by an efficient one-pot three-component reaction. With this procedure, the desired β-lactam products were obtained in good yields and with exclusive cis stereoselection, by combining a variety of benzaldehydes, malononitrile, and either 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione or 4-hydroxycoumarin in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.

Importance: Despite the growing popularity of cosmetic procedures, the sociocultural and quality-of-life factors that motivate patients to undergo such procedures are not well understood.

Objective: To estimate the relative importance of factors that motivate patients to seek minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This prospective, multicenter observational study was performed at 2 academic and 11 private dermatology practice sites that represented all US geographic regions.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria and pathogens has created an urgent need for the development of new antibiotics. Herein we report our investigations into the broad-spectrum activity of an easily prepared water-soluble polyaminosterol compound, namely claramine A1, against both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains. We also report its peculiar mechanism of action, which differs from that of all the other well-known classes of antibiotics, toward Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

Background And Objective: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is an indolent form of skin cancer that is rarely life threatening, but can cause significant cosmetic and functional morbidity. Surgical treatments often result in disfiguring scars, while topical therapies frequently result in recurrence. The need for a more effective nonsurgical alternative has led to the investigation of laser treatment of BCC.

The laws and regulations governing laser operation in the United States are vague, complex, and vary state-to-state. The objective of this study is to present an overview of the laws and regulations of laser operation in each of the 50 states. We performed an extensive online search of the law in each of the 50 states by examining multiple state cosmetology boards, state legislative boards, state nursing boards, and state medical boards.

A 56-year-old Caucasian male newly diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) M3 presented with a six-week history of multiple painful erythematous nodules scattered on his trunk and extremities, previously treated as abscesses with incision and drainage plus oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole without improvement. A punch biopsy was performed, and the histopathology and immunostaining profile were compatible with leukemia cutis secondary to AML. Induction chemotherapy for AML with cytarabine, etoposide, and mitoxantrone was initiated.

Analysis of saliva samples from individuals aged ≥ 60 years who had a history of zoster (group 1), zoster and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN; group 2), or no history of zoster (group 3) revealed varicella zoster virus (VZV) DNA in saliva samples from 11 of 17 individuals in group 1, 10 of 15 individuals in group 2, and 2 of 17 individuals in group 3. The frequency of VZV DNA detection was significantly higher (P = .001) in saliva of subjects with a history of zoster, with or without PHN (21 [67%] of 32 subjects in groups 1 and 2), than in saliva of age-matched subjects with no zoster history (2 [12%] of 17 subjects in group 3).

Seventy-seven crude extracts from leaves and stem barks of 15 Gabonese plants used in traditional medicine were evaluated for their cytotoxic, antileishmanial and antifungal activities. Most of the extracts exhibited cytotoxic activities toward human monocytes, and most particularly the hydromethanolic 50% (v/v) fraction of Ganophyllum giganteum leaves (IC(50)=1.3 microg/ml) as well as the methanolic extracts of Polyalthia suaveolens, Dioscorea preussii, Augouardia letestui leaves and Cola lizae stem barks (IC(50)<5 microg/ml).

The Alamo and New Rivers located in the Imperial Valley, California receive large volumes of irrigation runoff and discharge into the ecologically sensitive Salton Sea. Between 1993 and 2002 we conducted a series of studies to assess water quality using three aquatic species: a cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubia), a mysid (Neomysis mercedis), and a larval fish (Pimephales promelas). Although no mortality was observed with the P.

Relatively few studies have examined recoveries from source waters by using Environmental Protection Agency method 1623 with organism spike doses that are environmentally realistic and at turbidity levels commonly found in surface waters. In this study, we evaluated the filtration capacities and recovery efficiencies of the Gelman Envirochek (standard filter) and the Gelman Envirochek high-volume (HV) sampling capsules under environmental conditions. We also examined the performance of method 1623 under ambient conditions with matrix spike experiments using 10 organisms/liter.

Neurocysticercosis produces a variety of neurologic syndromes resulting from the cysticerci infestation of the central nervous system by the larvae of Taenia solium. Because of increased immigration to the United States from endemic areas, the incidence of neurocysticercosis has increased, especially in California, Texas, Arizona, and other southwestern states. Neuroimaging studies play a significant role in the diagnosis and management of patients with neurocysticercosis.
