The quest for the development of high-accuracy, point-of-care, and cost-effective testing platforms for SARS-CoV-2 infections is ongoing as current diagnostics rely on either assays based on costly yet accurate nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) or less selective and less sensitive but rapid and cost-effective antigen tests. As a potential solution, this work presents a fluorescence-based detection platform using a metal-organic framework (MOF) in an effective assay, demonstrating the potential of MOFs to recognize specific targets of the SARS-CoV-2 genome with high accuracy and rapid process turnaround time. As a highlight of this work, positive detection of SARS-CoV-2 is indicated by a visible color change of the MOF probe with ultrahigh detection selectivities down to single-base mismatch nucleotide sequences, thereby providing an alternative avenue for the development of innovative detection methods for diverse viral genomes.

Awareness for patient safety led a team to develop an electronic handoff communication tool for noncomplicated routine patients. The structure of SBAR (situation, background, assessment, and recommendation) was used when transferring patients to and from the progressive care unit and cardiac laboratories. The electronic SBAR gave staff a reliable and standard way to provide a patient handoff.

Ninety-five geriatric patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee were entered into an open parallel group study of sulindac (400 mg/day) and naproxen (500 mg/day), both given in twice-daily regimens. Patients received the drugs for 12 weeks. Both drugs produced improvements in the patients' overall condition.

Twenty-nine patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee(s) were entered into an 8-week, open, parallel group study of sulindac (400 mg daily) and piroxicam (20 mg daily). The results showed that both drugs produced improvements in the patients' overall condition with a trend for sulindac to be superior to piroxicam. There was no difference between the two drugs in terms of adverse reactions.
