Binaural unmasking is a remarkable phenomenon that it is substantially easier to detect a signal in noise when the interaural parameters of the signal are different from those of the noise - a useful mechanism in so-called cocktail party scenarios. In this study, we investigated the effect of binaural unmasking on neural tracking of the speech envelope. We measured EEG in 8 participants who listened to speech in noise at a fixed signal-to-noise ratio, in two conditions: one where speech and noise had the same interaural phase difference (both speech and noise having an opposite waveform across ears, SπNπ), and one where the interaural phase difference of the speech was different from that of the noise (only the speech having an opposite waveform across ears, SπN).

Background: Since human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) infection have been identified, significant improvements have been made concerning its diagnosis and treatment. Few contributions have been made in the area of quality indicators in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Dyslexia has frequently been related to atypical auditory temporal processing and speech perception. Results of studies emphasizing speech onset cues and reinforcing the temporal structure of the speech envelope, that is, envelope enhancement (EE), demonstrated reduced speech perception deficits in individuals with dyslexia. Can Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients efficiently learn to perform a complex motor skill when relying on procedural knowledge? To address this question, the authors compared the golf-putting performance of AD patients, older adults, and younger adults in 2 different learning situations: one that promotes high error rates (thus increasing the reliance on declarative knowledge) or one that promotes low error rates (thus increasing the reliance on procedural knowledge). Motor performance was poorer overall for AD patients and older adults relative to younger adults in the high-error condition but equivalent between similar groups in the low-error condition. Also, AD patients in the low-error condition had better performance at the final putting distance relative to those in the high-error condition.

Following a review of the available assessment scales and current practices of evaluation of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in French memory centres by GREFON (Groupe de réflexion sur l'évaluation fonctionnelle; Working Group on Functional Assessment), the main aim of this position paper was to provide good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines for the assessment of IADL. Another aim was to highlight the need for innovative tools adapted to the present and future evolution of such activities in real life, including the use of new technologies, the need for earlier detection of IADL impairment during the diagnostic process of mild neurocognitive disorders, and greater sensitivity to IADL changes during follow-up to allow adaptation of clinical management and evaluation of the impact of therapeutic interventions.
