A search for events with jets and missing transverse energy is performed in a data sample of pp collisions collected at √s=7 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 fb(-1).

The structure of the major light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex (LHCII) was analyzed by pulsed EPR measurements and compared with the crystal structure. Site-specific spin labeling of the recombinant protein allowed the measurement of distance distributions over several intra- and intermolecular distances in monomeric and trimeric LHCII, yielding information on the protein structure and its local flexibility. A spin label rotamer library based on a molecular dynamics simulation was used to take the local mobility of spin labels into account.

Noninvasive protein structural flexibility mapping by bimodal dynamic force microscopy.

Mapping of the protein structural flexibility with sub-2-nm spatial resolution in liquid is achieved by combining bimodal excitation and frequency modulation force microscopy. The excitation of two cantilever eigenmodes in dynamic force microscopy enables the separation between topography and flexibility mapping. We have measured variations of the elastic modulus in a single antibody pentamer from 8 to 18 MPa when the probe is moved from the end of the protein arm to the central protrusion.

Transoral thyroid and parathyroid surgery--development of a new transoral technique.

Background: Transluminal interventions via so-called natural orifices are gaining interest because they allow operative treatment without any skin incision. We previously described a transoral access for (para-)thyroid resection in pigs. To proceed with the first clinical trials, we evaluated the safety of the new technique.

Nanomechanical coupling enables detection and imaging of 5 nm superparamagnetic particles in liquid.

We demonstrate that a force microscope operated in a bimodal mode enables the imaging and detection of superparamagnetic particles down to 5 nm. The bimodal method exploits the nanomechanical coupling of the excited modes to enhance the sensitivity of the higher mode to detect changes in material properties. Background: Paget-Schroetter syndrome is a serious condition that if not treated promptly and properly leads to severe sequelae and permanent disability. In its late stage, chronic fibrous obliteration of the vein is rarely amenable to surgical treatment, except in very few select cases.

Methods: We treated 126 Paget-Schroetter syndrome patients (group I) by implementing an emergency protocol of thrombolysis by catheter-directed infusion, followed by immediate surgery through an anterior subclavian approach entailing (1) decompression of the thoracic inlet and (2) repairing the vein with a vein patch to reestablish its normal caliber.

This pilot study seeks to evaluate the patient perspective on rapid HIV screening in this setting.

Data on the growth of the head in the first year of life in children with autism spectrum disorders are inconsistent. We measured head circumference and body length during the first year of life, and determined whether the head grew in proportion to body length. This is a case-control study nested in a population-based screening study of autism spectrum disorders.

Rangewide phylogeography in the greater horseshoe bat inferred from microsatellites: implications for population history, taxonomy and conservation.

The distribution of genetic variability across a species' range can provide valuable insights into colonization history. To assess the relative importance of European and Asian refugia in shaping current levels of genetic variation in the greater horseshoe bats, we applied a microsatellite-based approach to data collected from 56 localities ranging from the UK to Japan. A decline in allelic richness from west Asia to the UK and analyses of F(ST) both imply a northwestward colonization across Europe.
