Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is being increasingly applied in patients with circulatory failure, but mortality remains high. An inflammatory response syndrome initiated by activation of blood components in the extracorporeal circuit may be an important contributing factor.
