 To analyze and compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of bunionette correction using two percutaneous surgical techniques: the Sponsel technique and the medial wedge osteotomy of the distal metaphysis. The results were evaluated individually and comparatively using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society's Lesser Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal Scale (AOFAS), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain assessment, and radiographic measurements of the intermetatarsal angle IV-V (AIM4-5) and metatarsophalangeal angle of the fifth ray (AMF-5).  This was a retrospective study conducted from May 2011 to February 2022.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the expression patterns of galectin-3 (Gal-3) and NLRP3 in heart transplant recipients according to the presence of reactivated Trypanosoma cruzi infection or allograft rejection in Chagas and non-Chagas heart transplant recipients.

Methods: Gal-3 and NLRP3 expression levels were analyzed in endomyocardial biopsies from 31 heart transplant recipients, including 16 patients with chronic Chagas disease (ChD) and 15 without ChD. Samples were evaluated during periods of graft rejection or ChD reactivation, characterized by intense myocardial cellular infiltrate, and after remission of the infiltrate, classified by histopathological severity.

In the present paper, the assessment of vortex-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction using amino-functionalized mesoporous combined with direct magnetic sorbent sampling (DMSS) in flame or furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS or FF-AAS) was demonstrated for highly sensitive silver determination in water samples. Despite the interest in improving the sensitivity of optical sensors using plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) (rods, wires, and stars), the full structural characterization of complex shape nanostructures is challenging. Here, we derive from a single scanning transmission electron microscope diffraction map (4D-STEM) a detailed determination of both the 3D shape and atomic arrangement of an individual 6-branched AuAg nanostar (NS) with high-aspect-ratio legs. The NS core displays an icosahedral structure, and legs are decahedral rods attached along the 5-fold axes at the core apexes.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gained increasing attention because it provides rich chemical information and high sensitivity, being applicable in many scientific fields including medical diagnosis, forensic analysis, food control, and microbiology. Although SERS is often limited by the lack of selectivity in the analysis of samples with complex matrices, the use of multivariate statistics and mathematical tools has been demonstrated to be an efficient strategy to circumvent this issue. Importantly, since the rapid development of artificial intelligence has been promoting the implementation of a wide variety of advanced multivariate methods in SERS, a discussion about the extent of their synergy and possible standardization becomes necessary.

The present study reports a direct approach to generate efficient hot spots using a nonresonant molecule bound to the inner part or hot spots that can increase the SERS sensitivity to obtain spectra of one and a few molecules. The 4-Mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) adsorbate, connected to the Ag surface by a thiolate-Ag bonding, was able to trigger a self-assembly process of AgNP, which occurred by cooperative hydrogen bonds between the carboxylic groups of 4-MBA located in different nanoparticles when the pH was adjusted to 4. The self-assembly structure was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and SERS (Surface Enhancement Raman Scattering), and DFT-based calculation of the model complex [AgNP-(4-MBA)-AgNP] was employed to improve the understanding of the self-assembled complex formation through the comparison of calculated and experimental SERS spectra.

Aims: In this study we evaluated the effect of pharmacological treatment with AnxA1-derived peptide Ac in an experimental model of toxicity induced by cisplatin.

Main Methods: Male rats were divided into Sham (control), Cisplatin (received intraperitoneal injections of 10 mg/kg/day of cisplatin for 3 days) and Ac (received intraperitoneal injections of 1 mg/kg/day of peptide, 15 min before cisplatin) groups.

Key Findings: After 6 h of the last dose of cisplatin, an acute inflammatory response was observed characterized by a marked increase in the number of neutrophils and GM-CSF, IL-β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α plasma levels.

The preparation of metal@(dielectric or semiconductor) core@shell hybrid materials have been shown promising for both SERS and SEF applications due to improved stability in the presence of ions and the adsorbate compared to non-covered metallic nanoparticles. However, fine control over the thickness of the covering layer is essential to maximize the intrinsic trade-off between the plasmonic enhancement and the chemical stability improvement. Here, the preparation of manganese dioxide ultrathin layers covered gold nanorods (AuNR@MnO) with varying thicknesses of the MnO layer is reported, and the characterization and evaluation of the resulting materials as SERS and SEF substrate.
