Clinical Correlation of Transcription Factor SOX3 in Cancer: Unveiling Its Role in Tumorigenesis.

Members of the SOX (SRY-related HMG box) family of transcription factors are crucial for embryonic development and cell fate determination. This review investigates the role of SOX3 in cancer, as aberrations in SOX3 expression have been implicated in several cancers, including osteosarcoma, breast, esophageal, endometrial, ovarian, gastric, hepatocellular carcinomas, glioblastoma, and leukemia. These dysregulations modulate key cancer outcomes such as apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), invasion, migration, cell cycle, and proliferation, contributing to cancer development.

Subacute Partially Reversible Leukoencephalopathy Expands the Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome Phenotype.

Objective: To report a series of atypical presentations of Aicardi-Goutières syndrome.

Methods: Clinical, neuroimaging, and genetic data.

Results: We report a series of six unrelated patients (five males) with a subacute loss of developmental milestones, pyramidal signs, and regression of communication abilities, with onset at ages ranging from 7 to 20 months, reaching a nadir after 4 to 24 weeks.

Predicting socioeconomic indicators using transfer learning on imagery data: an application in Brazil.

Censuses and other surveys responsible for gathering socioeconomic data are expensive and time consuming. For this reason, in poor and developing countries there often is a long gap between these surveys, which hinders the appropriate formulation of public policies as well as the development of researches. One possible approach to overcome this challenge for some socioeconomic indicators is to use satellite imagery to estimate these variables, although it is not possible to replace demographic census surveys completely due to its territorial coverage, level of disaggregation of information and large set of information.

Effects of different types of land-use on taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in a subtropical river network.

Expansion of agricultural and urban areas and intensification of catchment land-use increasingly affect different facets of biodiversity in aquatic communities. However, understanding the responses of taxonomic and functional diversity to specific conversion from natural forest to agriculture and urban land-use remains limited, especially in subtropical streams where biomonitoring programs and using functional traits are still under development. Here, we conducted research in a subtropical stream network to examine the responses of macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional diversity to different types of land-use in central China.

Concussion among soccer players in the 2017 Brazilian championship - the gap between protocol and medical practice.

Background: The present study aims to report traumatic brain injury (TBI) among soccer players in the 2017 Brazilian Soccer Championship and discuss the protocols for concussion evaluation.

Materials & Methods: This is an observational study utilizing video analysis of 380 matches. TBI was considered as any event in which one or more soccer player(s) had a head trauma.

The intergenerational transmission of participation in collective action: The role of conversation and political practices in the family.

In this study, we examined the intergenerational transmission of collective action from parents to children. Using a mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, we analysed data from 100 dyads of activist parents in Chile (involved in the mobilizations against the dictatorship during the 1980s) and their adult children (N = 200). The quantitative analysis addressed the role of conversations about politics in the family.

Functional responses of aquatic invertebrates to anthropogenic stressors in riparian zones of Neotropical savanna streams.

Riparian zones ensure freshwater ecosystem processes such as microclimate regulation, organic matter inputs, and fine substrate retention. These processes illustrate the importance of riparian zones for freshwater ecosystem functioning, maintaining biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of anthropogenic pressures on aquatic ecosystems. We aimed to determine the freshwater invertebrate biological traits that are most affected by anthropogenic stressors in the riparian zones of 210 Neotropical savanna headwater streams.

Design and assessment of a flexible fish robot actuated by shape memory alloys.

In this paper, we present a fish-like underwater robot inspired by the black bass fish. This robot is composed of a deformable structure and muscle-like linear actuators based on shape memory alloy wires. Such actuators are used to bend a continuous structure representing the backbone of the fish.

Risk of Conversion to Dementia in a Mild Behavioral Impairment Group Compared to a Psychiatric Group and to a Mild Cognitive Impairment Group.

Background: There is insufficient available information on behavioral changes in the absence of cognitive impairment as factors increasing the risk of conversion to dementia.

Objective: To observe and analyze patients with mild behavioral impairment (MBI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and a psychiatry group (PG) to compare the risk of progression to dementia.

Methods: From 677 initially assessed ≥60-year-old patients, a series of 348 patients was studied for a five-year period until censoring or conversion to dementia: 96 with MBI, 87 with MCI, and 165 with general psychiatry disorders, including 4 subgroups: Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis and Others.

The motor systems that produce behavioral movements are among the primary targets for the action of steroid hormones, including androgens. Androgens such as testosterone bind to androgen receptors (AR) to induce physiological changes in the size, strength, and energetic capacity of skeletal muscles, which can directly influence the performance of behaviors in which those muscles are used. Because tissues differentially express AR, resulting in tissue-specific sensitivity to androgens, AR expression may be a major target of selection for the evolution of behavior.

[A survey on biomarkers and early diagnosis in Alzheimer's disease].

Given the potential use of biomarkers in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in early stages, new ethical and communication dilemmas appear in everyday clinical practice. The aim of this study was to know the opinion of health professionals (HP) and general public (GP) on the implementation of early diagnostic techniques in AD and the use of biomarkers for this purpose. A survey with multiple choice answers was elaborated in two versions: one for HP and the other for GP.

Down syndrome passed from mother to child.

Down syndrome is the leading cause of inherited intellectual disability; it is characterized by mental retardation associated to physical growth delay and certain physical traits or features. It is caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21, being this trisomy the most common chromosomal aneuploidy. Women with Down syndrome are less fertile, and pregnancy in these women is rare, although the information on exact statistics of reproduction in these patients is very limited, and they often have difficulties with miscarriage, premature birth, and difficult labor.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis: recurrence presenting as ependimoplexitis.

A 55-year-old man with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) developed continuous parietal headache, malaise, nasal crusting and dry cough. Neurological exam revealed only left hand hypoesthesia in 4th and 5th finger. Brain MRI showed enlarged right choroid plexus, hyperintense periventricular white matter, thalami and right side of corpus callosum.

Behavioral symptoms related to cognitive impairment.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are core features of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. On one hand, behavioral symptoms in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can indicate an increased risk of progressing to dementia. On the other hand, mild behavioral impairment (MBI) in patients who usually have normal cognition indicates an increased risk of developing dementia.

Staying attached at a favorable site can be a major challenge for organisms in flow. Meeting this challenge depends on properties of the attachment structure and substrate, the nature of fluid flow, and the ability to adjust attachment force in response to hydrodynamic conditions. A broad taxonomic range of adult stages use adhesion or suction to attach to hard substrates in intertidal habitats, which experience flow from waves and tidal currents.

Myasis in uterine prolapse, successful treatment.

We describe the case of an elderly female with total genital prolapse and superinfected uterine myasis. The successful treatment included mechanical extraction of the larvae, antibiotics, and ivermectin (this last one reported for the first time); along with the surgical correction of the prolapse.

The economic cost of Alzheimer's disease: Family or public health burden?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients suffer progressive cognitive, behavioral and functional impairment which result in a heavy burden to patients, families, and the public-health system. AD entails both direct and indirect costs. Indirect costs (such as loss or reduction of income by the patient or family members) are the most important costs in early and community-dwelling AD patients.

Anti-trypanosomatid benzofuroxans and deoxygenated analogues: synthesis using polymer-supported triphenylphosphine, biological evaluation and mechanism of action studies.

Hybrid vinylthio-, vinylsulfinyl-, vinylsulfonyl- and vinylketo-benzofuroxans developed as anti-trypanosomatid agents, against Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp., have showed low micromolar IC(50) values. The synthetic route to access to these derivatives was an efficient Wittig reaction performed in mild conditions with polymer-supported triphenylphosphine (PS-TPP).

Synthesis, isomer characterization, and anti-inflammatory properties of nitroarachidonate.

Nitrated fatty acids (nitroalkenes) have been recently detected and quantified in cell membranes and human plasma. However, nitration of arachidonate (AA), that could redirect AA-dependent cell signaling pathways, has not been studied in detail. Herein, we synthesized and determined for the first time the isomer distribution of nitroarachidonate (AANO2) and demonstrate its ability to modulate inflammation.
