MetSCORE: a molecular metric to evaluate the risk of metabolic syndrome based on serum NMR metabolomics.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of medical conditions and risk factors correlating with insulin resistance that increase the risk of developing cardiometabolic health problems. The specific criteria for diagnosing MetS vary among different medical organizations but are typically based on the evaluation of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A unique, quantitative and independent estimation of the risk of MetS based only on quantitative biomarkers is highly desirable for the comparison between patients and to study the individual progression of the disease in a quantitative manner.

Evaluating the Diagnostic Accuracy of a Portable, Motorized, and Remotely Controlled Slit Lamp Imaging Adaptor Prototype for Head-Mounted Displays.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the performance of a portable and remotely controlled slit lamp imaging adaptor.

Methods: Twenty patients with anterior eye segment conditions participated in a randomized masked clinical trial. Imaging was performed using a Haag-Streit AG, BX 900 slit lamp biomicroscope and a new slit lamp prototype.

Geographical distribution of metals and metalloids along the estuary of the Oka River in the biosphere reserve of Urdaibai, Spain.

Sediments sampled at the estuary of the Oka River in the biosphere reserve of Urdaibai, Spain were analyzed for trace elements. Sediments were collected at 45 points of the estuary and the concentration of 14 elements was measured. The geoaccumulation indexes (I), Normalized Average Weighted Concentrations (NAWC) and mean Effect Range-Median quotients (mERMq) were calculated.

Trace elements in the water column of high-altitude Pyrenean lakes: Impact of local weathering and long-range atmospheric input.

High altitude (alpine) lakes are efficient sentinels of environmental processes, including local pollution and long-range atmospheric transfer, because these lakes are highly vulnerable to ongoing climate changes and increasing anthropogenic pressure. Towards improving the knowledge of trace element geochemistry in the water column of alpine lakes, we assessed 64 physico-chemical parameters, including macro- and micronutrients, major and trace element concentrations in the water column of 18 lakes in the Pyrenees, located along the border between France and Spain. Lake depth, morphology, retention time and watershed rock lithology did not exhibit sizable impact on major and trace element concentrations in the water column.

Metals and metalloids in high-altitude Pyrenean lakes: sources and distribution in pre-industrial and modern sediments.

High-altitude Pyrenean lakes are ecosystems far from local pollution sources, and thus they are particularly sensitive to the atmospheric deposition of metals and metalloids. This study aims to quantify the effect of human activity in 18 lakes located in both side of the France-Spain frontier. Sediment cores were collected in summer 2013, sampled at a 1cm resolution and the concentration of 24 elements was measured by ICP-MS.

Combined use of Sr/Sr and carbon isotopes with multielemental analysis for the geographical authentication of Tunisian and European olive oils.

The geographical authentication in the agrifood industry has become a major issue to guarantee the quality of food products. Olive oil (OO) is particularly a complex matrix and establishing a reliable approach for linking OO samples to their origin is an analytical challenge. In this study, the isotopic composition of carbon, strontium and the concentrations of seventeen elements were determined in OOs from Tunisia, Southern France and the South Basque country.

Liver steatosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate is associated with body mass index.

Background: Methotrexate (MTX) is the usual first-line treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Long-term use of MTX has been associated with liver steatosis (LS) and liver fibrosis (LF).

Aim: To determine if LS in patients treated with MTX for RA is associated with MTX cumulative dose (MTX-CD), metabolic syndrome (MtS), body mass index (BMI), the male sex, or LF.

Stress-induced changes in nociceptive responding post-surgery in preclinical rodent models.

Chronic post-surgical pain affects up to 85% of individuals depending on the type of surgery, the extent of inflammation, tissue and/or nerve damage. Pre-surgical stress is associated with greater pain intensity, prolonged recovery and is one of the main risk factors for the development of chronic post-surgical pain. Clinically valid animal models provide an important means of examining the mechanisms underlying the effects of stress on post-surgical pain and identifying potential novel therapeutic targets.

Portable Anterior Eye Segment Imaging System for Teleophthalmology.

Objective: This study aims to compare a new prototype for a portable anterior eye segment imaging system with the standard method for ophthalmology examination.

Methods: The new imaging system consisted of two IMX219 Arducam autofocus sensors (Arducam, China, Nanjing) for Raspberry Pi V2 camera module connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero W (Raspberry Pi Foundation, UK, Cambridge) that clips to a wearable headset. The 2D videos of the anterior eye segment were recorded with the new system and a 720p FaceTime HD camera (Apple, Cupertino, CA).

Dynamics, distribution, and transformations of mercury species from pyrenean high-altitude lakes.

While mercury (Hg) is a major concern in all aquatic environments because of its methylation and biomagnification pathways, very few studies consider Hg cycling in remote alpine lakes which are sensitive ecosystems. Nineteen high-altitude pristine lakes from Western/Central Pyrenees were investigated on both northern (France) and southern (Spain) slopes (1620-2600 m asl.).

Salivary biomarkers for diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction: A systematic review.

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) accounts for about 7 million deaths per year worldwide. The early identification of signs and symptoms and the detection of specific serological markers of this disease are mandatory to reach a prompt diagnosis and begin potentially life-saving treatment. Point-of-care technologies applied to salivary diagnostics can provide rapid, simple, low-cost, and accurate measurements of specific markers and can also be used in emergency settings.

Combined drug triads for synergic neuroprotection in retinal degeneration.

This review focuses on retina degeneration occurring during glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and on the potential therapeutic use of triads of repositioned medicines, addressed to distinct but complementary targets, to prevent, delay or stop retina cell death. Although myriad pathogenic mechanisms have been implicated in these disorders, common signaling pathways leading to apoptotic cell death to all of them, and to all neurodegenerative diseases are (i) calcium dyshomeostasis/excitotoxicity; (ii) oxidative stress/mitochondrial dysfunction, and (iii) neuroinflammation/P2X7 receptor activation. From a therapeutic point of view, it is relevant to consider the multitarget approach based on the use of combined medicines acting on complementary pathogenic mechanisms that has been highly successful in the treatment of chronic diseases such as cancer, AIDS, pain, hypertension, Parkinson's disease, cardiac failure, depression, or the epilepsies as the basic mechanisms of cell death do not differ between the different CNS degenerative diseases.

Clinical Features and Outcomes Associated with Bronchial Asthma Among COVID-19 Hospitalized Patients.

Background: The impact of diagnosis treatment and bronchial asthma on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) associated outcomes remains unclear.

Methods: Electronic health records of 130 patients with asthma among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were reviewed.

LAS194046, a novel pan-Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, shows inhibitory effects on T2 allergic lung inflammation in rats. In this work we analyze the effects of LAS194046, fluticasone propionate and their combination in neutrophils from non-T2 severe asthma and COPD patients in vitro.

In a previous manuscript, a negative association between fatty liver development and hepatic expression was observed. To study the role of TXNDC5 in the liver, we generated -deficient mice.

Selenium distribution and speciation in waters of pristine alpine lakes from central-western Pyrenees (France-Spain).

The speciation of both redox reactive and volatile selenium (Se) compounds, barely reported in pristine aquatic environments, has never been investigated in remote alpine lakes, considered as sensitive ecosystems to detect the effect of global change. This work presents an integrated investigation on Se distribution and speciation conducted in 20 high altitude pristine lakes from the central-western Pyrenees. Five seasonal sampling campaigns were carried out after snowmelt (June/July) and in early fall (October) for the period 2017-2019.

Trace Elements Analysis of Tunisian and European Extra Virgin Olive Oils by ICP-MS and Chemometrics for Geographical Discrimination.

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of trace elements in olive oils from different locations and their use for geographical authentication. Characterization of atmospheric aerosols in the Antarctic region using Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

The non-destructive spectroscopic characterization of airborne particulate matter (PM) was performed to gain better knowledge of the internal structures of atmospheric aerosols at the particle level in the Antarctic region, along with their potential sources. PM and soil samples were collected during the 2016-2017 austral summer season at the surroundings of the Spanish Antarctic Research Station "Gabriel de Castilla" (Deception Island, South Shetland Islands). PM was deposited in a low-volume sampler air filter.

Antithrombotic strategies in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation revascularized with drug-eluting stents: PACO-PCI (EPIC-15) registry.
