Purpose: Lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) can complicate lung transplantation or cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, increasing morbidity and mortality. In LIRI, pro-inflammatory cytokines are activated, reactive oxygen species are generated and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is up-regulated, altering lung mechanics. We tested the effect of the flavonoid apigenin on a rodent model of LIRI.

Objectives: Lung ischaemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) frequently occurs after lung transplantation or cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, thus increasing postoperative morbidity and mortality. As LIRI is associated with the release of reactive oxygen species and a subsequent inflammatory reaction, we tested whether amifostine, a thiol and free radical scavenger, has a beneficial effect on LIRI.

Methods: A total number of 72 Wistar rats were subjected to LIRI with or without a single or double dose of amifostine (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally).

This study was designed to evaluate the oscillometric technique for intermittent non-invasive measurement of arterial pressure (AP) in the anaesthetized pig. In six pigs under sevoflurane anaesthesia, intermittent (every 2 minutes) oscillometric measurements of AP made at a forelimb (FL), a hindlimb (HL) and the tail base were compared with simultaneous direct AP measurements made at the aortic arch (AA) over a wide pressure range (30-140 mmHg of mean AP). All oscillometric measurements strongly correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient >0.

Background: Peri-operative statin therapy in cardiac surgery cases is reported to reduce the rate of mortality, stroke, postoperative atrial fibrillation, and systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammation could affect the hemodynamic parameters and stability. We set out to study the effect of statin therapy on perioperative hemodynamic parameters and its clinical outcome.

Background: In right ventricular failure (RVF), an interatrial shunt can relieve symptoms of severe pulmonary hypertension by reducing right ventricular preload and increasing systemic flow. Using a pig model to determine if a pulmonary artery-left atrium shunt (PA-LA) is better than a right atrial-left atrial shunt (RA-LA), we compared the hemodynamic effects and blood gases between the two shunts.

Methods: Thirty, male Large White pigs weighting in average 21.

Background: Lactate formation is up-regulated in tumorous cells by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). High serum LDH level is linked to many malignancies with poorer survival, but tumour LDH-5 has not been well investigated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Patients And Methods: In 89 patients operated on for NSCLC stage I-III, the serum LDH level was assayed and immunohistochemistry for tumour LDH-5 was performed.

Background/aim: A prospective study was designed to investigate the effects of anesthesia, particularly that of the one-lung ventilation procedure (OLV), on the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha (HIF1alpha) in patients with lung carcinomas and pneumothorax.

Materials And Methods: The immunohistochemical expression of HIF1alpha was studied in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from 60 patients who had undergone thoracic surgery for lung cancer (n=48) or pneumothorax (n=12) under OLV general anesthesia.

Results: There was a significant, and rather unexpected, association of HIF1alpha expression with high body mass index (BMI) (p=0.

We report a case of a male patient who received an implantation of a Starr-Edwards-caged-ball-valve-prosthesis in 1967. The surgery and postoperative course were without complications and the patient recovered well after the operation. For the next four decades, the patient remained asymptomatic--no restrictions on his lifestyle and without any complications.

Introduction: The reliability of autocalibrated pressure waveform analysis by the FloTrac-Vigileo(R) (FTV) system for the determination of cardiac output in comparison with intermittent pulmonary arterial thermodilution (IPATD) is controversial. The present prospective comparison study was designed to determine the effects of variations in arterial blood pressure on the reliability of the FTV system in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Methods: Comparative measurements of cardiac output by FTV (derived from a femoral arterial line; software version 1.

Background: Emergent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) for acute myocardial infarction is associated with an increased operative risk. For estimation of mortality risk, the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) is appropriate up to a medium risk score (<6 points). To predict mortality risk more accurately in cases of higher EuroSCORE, additional cardiac data can be helpful.

The minimized extracorporeal circulation system (MECC) is being used to reduce priming volume and blood/polymer contact during cardiac procedures. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and potential advantages of the system in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. We included two groups of patients destined for CABG in a prospective, randomized study: Group A was operated on the usual pump (n = 30) while Group B was operated using the MECC (n = 50).

Background And Aims: External support of vein grafts by fibrin glue possibly prevents overdistension, vascular remodeling, and neointimal hyperplasia. Previous animal models of neointimal hyperplasia showed conflicting results. Here, long-term effects of external fibrin glue support were studied in a new rat model of jugular vein to abdominal aorta transposition.

Background: More than 50% of aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts are occluded 10 years after surgery. Intimal hyperplasia is the initial critical step in the progression toward occlusion. Internal mammary veins, which are physiologically prone to less hydrostatic pressure, may undergo an accelerated progression to intimal hyperplasia and thus be suitable for investigation of the mechanisms of aortocoronary vein graft disease.

Background: Aspiration of subglottic secretions is a widely used intervention for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. However, using the Hi-Lo Evac endotracheal tube (Hi-Lo Evac; Mallinckrodt; Athlone, Ireland) (Evac ETT), dysfunction of the suction lumen and subsequent failure to aspirate the subglottic secretions are common. Our objective in this study was to determine the causes of suction lumen dysfunction experienced with the Evac ETT.
