Pre-Pandemic Landscape of the Oklahoma Public Health Workforce: A Case Study From the Region 6 Training Needs Assessment Survey, 2019.

Context: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a well-trained public health workforce prior to the public health crisis. Public health training centers regularly assess workforce needs and their pre-pandemic data play vital roles in guiding public health workforce development beyond the crisis.

Program: In 2019, Oklahoma partners of the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center (R6SCPHTC) co-conducted an online survey of the public health workforce located in the Health Resources & Services Administration Region 6.

Viral species differentially influence macronutrient preferences based on honey bee genotype.

Food quantity and macronutrients contribute to honey bee health and colony survival by mediating immune responses. We determined if this held true for bees injected with chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) and deformed wing virus (DWV), two common honey bee ssRNA viruses. Pollen-substitute diet and syrup consumption rates and macronutrient preferences of two Varroa-resistant stocks (Pol-Line and Russian bees) were compared to Varroa-susceptible Italian bees.

Colony-Level Viral Load Influences Collective Foraging in Honey Bees.

Nutrition is an important component of social insect colony health especially in the face of stressors such as parasitism and viral infections. Honey bees are known to preferentially select nectar and pollen based on macronutrient and phytochemical contents and in response to pathogen loads. However, given that honey bees live in colonies, collective foraging decisions may be impacted directly by forager infection status but also by colony health.

The Importance of Incorporating Stroke Survivors' Health Perceptions in Addressing Health Care Disparities.

Patient-centered research in determining health care disparities among stroke patients is limited. Several studies have examined patient perceptions in stroke survivors and have utilized the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) and Brief Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (BIPQ), which are validated measures of illness beliefs. Yet, there are several domains these surveys could assess that warrant more investigation, including: perception of medication side effects; acceptance of the stroke diagnosis; consequence and long-term impact of symptoms; the importance of medications in long-term health maintenance; and perception of ease of access to equitable health care.

Benefits of an interdisciplinary stroke clinic: addressing a gap in physical therapy at post-stroke neurology follow-up.

Background And Purpose: An interdisciplinary stroke clinic (ISC) can improve communication and identify people post-stroke who have not reached their full recovery potential. We describe the characteristics of participants who underwent physical therapy (PT) evaluation in addition to their outpatient neurology evaluation and identify the association of assessment scales that predicted referral for additional rehabilitation.

Methods: Participants' post-stroke seen in the ISC were included in the study.

A Snapshot of Oklahoma's CHR/CHW Workforce: Results from the Region 6 Training Needs Assessment Survey, 2019.

Background –: The Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center conducts needs assessments to inform the development of online trainings tailored to the HRSA Region 6 health and public health workforce. The purpose of this study was to assess Oklahoma's Community Health Representative (CHR) / Community Health Worker (CHW) workforce characteristics, current trainings, and training needs to guide the development of online trainings.

Methods –: This survey-based needs assessment for health and public health workforce training needs asked about alternative job titles, top three health issues addressed, roles played, skills used, current trainings, and training needs.

Breast Density Notification: Current UK National Practice.

Increased breast density is a risk factor for breast cancer and can mask cancer on mammography. This survey attempts to understand clinician views regarding breast density notification in the United Kingdom. Two separate breast density surveys were distributed to radiologists and breast surgeons between May 2019 and May 2020.

To date, the only reported post-infectious COVID-19 manifestations of neurologic disease include cognitive deficits and dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system.

Obesogenic Behaviors and Depressive Symptoms' Influence on Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in American Indian Children.

Background: American Indian (AI) populations suffer disproportionately from cardiovascular disease and depression as compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Behaviors that contribute to obesity are considered obesogenic and include poor diet, low physical activity, and high screen time. This study examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and obesogenic behaviors on cardiometabolic risk factors in AI youth.

Participants: participants were 71 pregnant women with substance use disorders entering a gender-specific, substance use disorder, residential treatment facility.

Co-location of behavioral health and primary care services: Community Care of North Carolina and the Center of Excellence for Integrated Care.

The North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services works with partners to reduce the impact of behavioral health conditions in communities throughout the state. We review state-funded behavioral health initiatives that provide support to military personnel and their families, with special attention to public services and co-location efforts.

An autosomal dominant or X-linked osteodysplastic disorder with severe cervical involvement.

A disorder affecting bone and cartilage growth is described in a mother and her 3-year-old son. A dysplastic process involving the vertebral bodies, most pronounced in the cervical region and leading to cervical dislocation in the first of these two patients, is the most significant complication of this disorder. This entity appears unrelated to other previously described skeletal dysplasias with cervical kyphosis as a major manifestation.

Chronic vascular catheterisation of the koala and the rabbit.

Vascular access ports were surgically placed, first in rabbits maintained under laboratory conditions, and then in koalas maintained in a wildlife park. The ports remained patent for 9 months in rabbits and for up to 13 months in the koalas and were removed successfully. They allowed collection of blood samples without assistance or disturbance in koalas, and without stress as reflected by plasma cortisol concentration.

Variation in reproductive parameters in the captive male koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Plasma androgen concentration was measured in six mature male koalas over 23 months. During this time, four animals were housed isolated from females. Androgen concentration showed a seasonal change, with a nadir about the middle of the year, and began to increase sometime before the start of the breeding season.

Use of the Pavlik harness for hip displacements. When to abandon treatment.

Seven hundred twenty congenitally dislocated or subluxated hips in 550 patients less than one year old, treated with the Pavlik harness, were retrospectively reviewed. Overall, 11% of the hips proved irreducible by Pavlik harness treatment, 9% had dysplasia at the end of harness treatment, and 5% developed dysplasia by the age of two years two months (average). Fourteen percent of the hips positive for Ortolani's sign, 6% of the hips positive for Barlow's sign, and 2% of the congenitally subluxated hips required open or closed reduction followed by plaster hip spica immobilization.

Lightening of dark radiographs with a superproportional reducing agent.

Copper sulfate reducer is useful for lightening and improving the diagnostic quality of dark radiographs. The solution consists of copper sulfate, sodium chloride, and sulfuric acid. The radiograph is immersed and bleached in the solution until it turns white, redeveloped in weak developer, and fixed.

Methods for physical stabilization of ashed teeth in incinerated remains.

Methods for physically stabilizing the extremely fragile ashed teeth that are often encountered in incinerated human remains were investigated. Results of a questionnaire sent to forensic anthropologists and forensic odontologists disclosed that, for these two groups, the most popular methods currently used are impregnation with a solution of polyvinyl acetate or application of cyanoacrylate cement, respectively. In addition, extracted human teeth were incinerated in the laboratory and impregnated with commercially available preparations of either cyanoacrylate cement, clear acrylic spray paint, hair spray, spray furniture varnish, clear fingernail polish, quick-setting epoxy cement, Duco household cement, polyvinyl acetate polymer in acetone, or self-curing clear dental acrylic resin.
