Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a multimorbidity disorder ranging from excess accumulation of fat in the liver (steatosis) to steatohepatitis (NASH) and end-stage cirrhosis, and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a subset of patients. The defining features of NASH are inflammation and progressive fibrosis. Currently, no pharmaceutical therapies are available for NAFLD, NASH and HCC; therefore, developing novel treatment strategies is desperately needed.

The appearance of colony growth sectors on solid medium plates has been described in many fungi. Although the molecular bases of this phenomenon remain largely unknown, possible relationships with genetic or epigenetic changes have been reported. Here we present a method to quantify the frequency of colony growth sectors in Fusarium oxysporum, which can be used to compare different fungal strains and to infer their genetic instability.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and efficiency of a Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) graft preparation device, DescePrep, through measurement of graft viability, yield, and preparation time in both healthy and diabetic (high-risk) donor eyes.

Methods: Twenty nondiabetic and 10 diabetic donor corneas were processed using DescePrep, which standardizes the liquid bubble technique. Corneas were stained with trypan blue and then processed.

Among them, selective breeding of resilient animals to CC is presented as an opportunity to maintain high levels of performance regardless of variation in weather. In the present work, we proposed a set of breeding strategies to improve weather resilience in dairy goats raised in north-western European Atlantic conditions and dairy sheep raised in Mediterranean conditions while improving production efficiency at the same time.

An Optimized Self-Compensated Solution for Temperature and Strain Cross-Sensitivity in FBG Interrogators Based on Edge Filter.

Optical fiber sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are prone to measurement errors if the cross-sensitivity between temperature and strain is not properly considered. This paper describes a self-compensated technique for canceling the undesired influence of temperature in strain measurement. An edge-filter-based interrogator is proposed and the central peaks of two FBGs (sensor and reference) are matched with the positive and negative slopes of a Fabry-Perot interferometer that acts as an optical filter.

Prevalence of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli and Salmonella in Native Pecan Orchards as Influenced by Waiting Periods between Grazing and Harvest.

Abstract: Animals (grazing, working, or intrusion) in produce production areas may present a potential contamination source of foodborne pathogens on produce. Cattle grazing on native pecan production orchards, a common practice in the southern United States, provides an opportunity to study the impact of grazing practice and waiting periods on contamination rates of foodborne pathogens of tree nuts. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in native pecan production orchards as influenced by waiting periods between grazing cattle and pecan harvest.

Corporate parenting in a pandemic: Considering the delivery and receipt of support to care leavers in Wales during Covid-19.

This paper considers the support available to care leavers during the Covid-19 pandemic from their corporate parents. The paper contributes to a developing evidence base concerned with social work efforts to adapt and maintain support provision during the unprecedented circumstances, and provides insight into how such support was perceived and experienced. Funded by Voices from Care Cymru and Cardiff University, a qualitative, mixed method study was conducted which included a survey of Welsh Local Authority professionals (n = 22) and interviews with Welsh care-experienced young people aged 17-24 (n = 17).

Heritable variation in a gene's expression arises from mutations impacting - and -acting components of its regulatory network. Here, we investigate how -regulatory mutations are distributed within the genome and within a gene regulatory network by identifying and characterizing 69 mutations with -regulatory effects on expression of the same focal gene in . Relative to 1766 mutations without effects on expression of this focal gene, we found that these -regulatory mutations were enriched in coding sequences of transcription factors previously predicted to regulate expression of the focal gene.

Insights of the formation mechanism of nanostructured titanium oxide polymorphs from different macromolecular metal-complex precursors.

The insight into the mechanism of the unprecedented formation of pure anatase TiO from the macromolecular (Chitosan)•(TiOSO) precursor has been investigated using micro Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The formation of a graphitic film was observed upon annealing of the macromolecular precursor, reaching a maximum at about 500 °C due to decomposition of the polymeric chain of the Chitosan and (PS-co-4-PVP) polymers. The proposed mechanism is the nucleation and growth of TiO nanoparticles over this graphitic substrate.
