Dentinal surfaces prepared with Er:YAG laser have significantly different characteristics from those prepared with conventional instruments. Different hybrid layer morphologies and thicknesses occur, which may result in differences in the quality of restorations placed on dentinal surfaces prepared with a diamond bur when compared with using an Er:YAG Laser. This study compared the hybrid layer thickness and morphology formed utilizing Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus (SBMP) on dentin prepared with a diamond bur in a high speed handpiece and dentin prepared with an Er:YAG laser.

We studied the stepwise hydration and solvent-mediated deprotonation of the benzene*+ cation (Bz*+) and found several unusual features. The solvent binding energies DeltaH on-1,n for the reactions Bz*+(H2O)n-1 + H2O --> Bz*+(H2O)n are nearly constant at 9 +/- 1 kcal mol-1 for n = 1 to 8. We observed a remarkable sudden decrease in the entropy of association accompanying the formation of Bz*+(H2O)7 and Bz*+(H2O)8, indicating strong orientational restraint in the hydration shells of these clusters consistent with the formation of cagelike structures.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a self-etching primer and a non-rinse conditioner with the effect of a conventional adhesive system on the penetration depth in dentin of human teeth, using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Fifteen human third molar teeth were sectioned into 2 pieces. All pieces were flattened with grade 600 to 1200 silicon carbide paper and divided into 6 groups: group 1 - Prime & Bond NT (NT), negative control; group 2 - 37% phosphoric acid + Prime & Bond NT (PANT), positive control; group 3 - Non-rinse Conditioner (NRC) + Prime & Bond NT (NRCNT); group 4 - NRC + Prime & Bond 2.

Objectives: Talc pleurodesis can be offered to patients with hepatic hydrothorax. The authors wanted to determine their patient's eligibility for talc pleurodesis by excluding a pleural-peritoneal shunt.

Materials And Methods: The authors measured the size of the talc particles and matched them with the radionuclide particle size.

This study aimed to identify and understand the essence of the anguish of five asthmatic women, patients of the Pneumology Service of a hospital in Porto Alegre, and how they interact with the health professionals. It uses the qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews. The content analysis identified: a dependent relationship and an incidence of separation anguish demonstrated by the way the women deal with medication and the caregivers; some of the women's impediments; difficulties to describe the illness and asthma crisis.

The cardiovascular effects of reticuline, isolated in a pure form from the stem of Ocotea duckei Vattimo, were studied in rats by using a combined in vivo and in vitro approach. In normotensive rats, reticuline (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, i. v.

In a previous work, we demonstrated that, in normotensive rats, AFL induced a marked hypotension due to a decrease in total peripheral resistances (TPR), partially secondary to the release of NO by the endothelium. NO did not, however, account for the total vasodilation produced by AFL in these rats. The aim of this study was to determine the involvement of the intracellular calcium mobilization in the vasorelaxant action induced by AFL in the rat aorta.

This study evaluated the "in vitro" shear bond strength of two materials to bovine enamel when used as porcelain laminate veneer bonding systems. The authors used the dual-cured resin cement Variolink II (Vivadent) and the light-cured flowable composite Natural-Flow (DFL). Porcelain cylinders were bonded to bovine enamel following manufacturers' directions.

Background: Race is commonly described in epidemiological surveys based on phenotypic characteristics. Training of interviewers to identify race is time-consuming and self identification of race might be difficult to interpret. The aim of this study was to determine the agreement between race definition based on the number of ascendants with black skin colour, with the self-assessment and observer's assessment of the skin colour.

The authors describe the case of a young Brazilian woman who was treated of ileocolonic Crohn's disease sparing rectum, as confirmed by colonoscopy and histopathological examination. After a 4-year course of sulfasalazine treatment, she presented with skin facial lesions in vespertilio, fever, arthralgias and high titers of anti-ANA and LE cells. A sulfasalazine-induced lupus syndrome was diagnosed, because after sulfasalazine withdrawal and a short course of prednisone, the clinical symptoms disappeared and the laboratory tests returned to normal.

Background: The recessive ataxias are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by cerebellar ataxia associated with a number of different neurologic, ophthalmologic, or general signs. They are often difficult to classify in clinical terms, except for Friedreich ataxia, ataxia-telangiectasia, and a relatively small group of rare conditions for which the molecular basis has already been defined.

Objectives: To study the clinical presentation and to define diagnostic criteria in a group of Portuguese patients with ataxia and ocular apraxia, an autosomal recessive form without the essential clinical and laboratory features of ataxia-telangiectasia.

Objective: Our purpose was to measure the transfer of lamivudine ([-]-2'-deoxy-3'-thiacytidine) across the human placenta both alone and in the presence of zidovudine.

Study Design: Nine placentas from term, elective cesarean deliveries were analyzed with use of the ex vivo single cotyledon perfusion system. Antipyrine was used as the reference compound to measure the clearance index values of lamivudine alone and in combination with zidovudine.

Endodontically-treated, pulpless teeth tend to become brittle and loose their natural resistance to intraoral functional stress. To retain the core to the root, posts are placed in such teeth. This article presents the rationale for placing the posts, reports past results, and discusses the current materials and implementation procedures.

The "nursing process" is a systematic decision-making approach to problem solving based on open-system theory. This theory assumes that there is an on-going interchange between all system components. Components cannot be viewed in isolation, because decisions regarding one component will affect other components.

Six children suffering from a congenital motor and sensory neuropathy (CMSN) are described. Severe muscle hypotonia, areflexia and a delay of motor development are detectable in all of them. Sural nerve biopsies exhibited an almost complete absence of myelinated fibres and a correspondingly slow nerve conduction velocity (NCV) of less than 10 m/s was detectable in four patients.

Thirty-five patients, exclusively girls, from three countries had a uniform and striking progressive encephalopathy. After normal general and psychomotor development up to the age of 7 to 18 months, developmental stagnation occurred, followed by rapid deterioration of higher brain functions. Within one-and-a-half years this deterioration led to severe dementia, autism, loss of purposeful use of the hands, jerky truncal ataxia, and acquired microcephaly.
