The corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis, which is one of the most important vectors of maize diseases, had the morphology of its spermatozoa described more than 40 years ago. However, the description is imprecise, requiring certain rectifications. Hence, we re-describe the sperm morphology of this species using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

In order to assess the relative importance of historical and post-disturbance conditions as determinants of community structure, we undertook reciprocal transplants, at different successional stages, of sessile communities developing at recreational piers that were previously observed to show contrasting fish predation pressure and settlement rate in the São Sebastião Channel, Brazil. Regardless the direction of state shift, after 15 weeks communities converged to the destination site structure, substantially drifting away from the path observed at origin, therefore revealing high susceptibility to environmental change.

Characterization of Heat Diffusion Properties of Rubberized Two-Layer Systems Using Open Photoacoustic Cell Spectroscopy.

We applied the open photoacoustic cell method operating at high frequency as an efficient and highly precise tool for the measurement of thermal properties of rubberized two-layer systems. The heat-coupling between the two layers is treated using the analogy between thermal and electrical resistances widely used in heat transfer problems. The thermal resistance between the two layers is considered effective and the problem is decoupled for each layer.

Quinone-based fluorophores for imaging biological processes.

Quinones are privileged chemical structures playing crucial roles as redox and alkylating agents in a wide range of processes in cells. The broad functional array of quinones has prompted the development of new chemical approaches, including C-H bond activation and asymmetric reactions, to generate probes for examining their activity by means of fluorescence imaging. This tutorial review covers recent advances in the design, synthesis and applications of quinone-based fluorescent agents for visualizing specific processes in multiple biological systems, from cells to tissues and complex organisms in vivo.

CT Chest and pulmonary functional changes in patients with HTLV-associated myelopathy in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon.

The aim of this study was to compare computed tomography (CT) scans of chest and lung function among patients with Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 (HTLV) with and without HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). In this cross-sectional study performed between January 2013 and June 2016, we included 48 patients with HAM/TSP (19 women and 11 men) and without HAM/TSP (12 women and 6 men). We compared CT findings and lung functions of these groups.

Evidence of a procentriole during spermiogenesis in the coccinellid insect Adalia decempunctata (L): An ultrastructural study.

We studied spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis in Adalia decempunctata (L), a beetle of the Coccinellidae family. The spermatocyte exhibits two centrioles which elongate to form a pair of primary cilia. A novel structure, appearing in cross sections as a dense droplet, is observed near the long centriole during spermiogenesis, and is soon accompanied by a procentriole (PCL).

One of the viral segments of bracovirus contains a gene that has been previously described as a helicase of unknown origin.

A century of introductions by coastal sessile marine invertebrates in Angola, South East Atlantic Ocean.

South Atlantic studies referring to non-native taxa are mostly restricted to Argentinean, Brazilian, and South African coasts. In this study we examined the literature to provide a list of sessile marine invertebrates along the Angolan coast, to infer its introduction status according to their biogeographical distribution and natural history. We reported 29 non-native and 7 cryptogenic species, a small number when compared to other South Atlantic regions of similar extension.

Insulin Resistance Predicts Atherogenic Lipoprotein Profile in Nondiabetic Subjects.

Background: Atherogenic diabetes is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk and mortality in diabetic individuals; however, the impact of insulin resistance (IR) in lipid metabolism in preclinical stages is generally underreported. For that, we evaluated the capacity of IR to predict an atherogenic lipid subfraction profile.

Methods: Complete clinical evaluation and biochemical analysis (lipid, glucose profile, LDL, and HDL subfractions and LDL phenotype and size) were performed in 181 patients.

The importance of outdoor play for young children's healthy development.

Changes in current societies are affecting childhood experiences. Time for outdoor play is diminishing, contributing to more sedentary lifestyles, disconnected from the natural world. Recognizing the importance of outdoor play for young children's healthy growth, a project focused on the exploration of the outdoor environment was developed with a group of young children in an early childhood education setting in Portugal.

Identification and characterization of a subtelomeric satellite DNA in Callitrichini monkeys.

Repetitive DNAs are abundant fast-evolving components of eukaryotic genomes, which often possess important structural and functional roles. Despite their ubiquity, repetitive DNAs are poorly studied when compared with the genic fraction of genomes. Here, we took advantage of the availability of the sequenced genome of the common marmoset Callithrix jacchus to assess its satellite DNAs (satDNAs) and their distribution in Callitrichini.

Environmental aspects related to tuberculosis and intestinal parasites in a low-income community of the Brazilian Amazon.

We carried out a cross-sectional study from January to December 2015 on 1,425 inhabitants from a floating population in the Brazilian Amazon (Murinin district, Pará State) to describe the population-based prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) from 2011 to 2014, recent TB contacts (rCts) latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (LTBI) , the coverage of the local health network, socio-environmental factors, and frequency of intestinal parasitic infection (IPI). We found that the sanitary structure was inadequate, with latrines being shared with other rooms within the same accommodation; well water was the main source of water, and 48% of families had low incomes. The average rate of TB was 105/100, 000 inhabitants per year; one third of TB patients had been household contacts of infected individuals in the past, and 23% of rCts were LTBI.

Frontiers in endocrine disruption: Impacts of organotin on the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs), chemical substances widely used in industry and ubiquitously distributed in the environment, are able to interfere with the synthesis, release, transport, metabolism, receptor binding, action, or elimination of endogenous hormones. EDs affect homeostasis mainly by acting on nuclear and nonnuclear steroid receptors but also on serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and orphan receptors in addition to thyroid hormone receptors. Tributyltin (TBT), an ED widely used as a pesticide and biocide in antifouling paints, has well-documented actions that include inhibiting aromatase and affecting the nuclear receptors PPARγ and RXR.

Effect of the exercise of walkers performed in public squares with spontaneous or prescribed intensity on post-exercise hypotension.

Objective: To quantify the intensity adopted by walkers in public squares and check the occurrence and magnitude of post-exercise hypotension in the spontaneously adopted intensity and in a prescribed intensity.

Methods: In 98 volunteers (38 of them being hypertensive), walkers in public squares of the city of João Pessoa, State of Paraíba, Brazil, we have identified the intensity of a usual training monitored by heart rate and we have investigated the occurrence and magnitude of post-exercise hypotension. Subsequently, participants were instructed to walk with moderate intensity.

We examined the satellitome in the cricket Eneoptera surinamensis (2n = 9, neo-XXY, males) to characterize the molecular evolution of its neo-sex chromosomes.

RELEVANCE OF WHOLE BODY VIBRATION EXERCISE IN SPORT: A SHORT REVIEW WITH SOCCER, DIVER AND COMBAT SPORT.

Background: Whole body vibration exercise (WBVE) has been used as a safe and accessible exercise and important reviews have been published about the use of this exercise to manage diseases and to improve physical conditions of athletes The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of WBVE to soccer players, divers and combat athletes.

Material And Methods: This study was made through a systematic review of publications involving WBVE and the selected sports in two databases (Pubmed and PEDRo).

Results: It were identified 10 studies involving WBVE and sports (6 of soccer, 2 of diving and 2 of sport combat) with 156 subjects (80 soccer players, 32 divers and 44 combat athletes), with age from 17 to 44 years old.

p-NO-Bn-Hneunpa and Hneunpa-Trastuzumab: Bifunctional Chelator for Radiometalpharmaceuticals and In Immuno-Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Imaging.

Potentially nonadentate (NO) bifunctional chelator p-SCN-Bn-Hneunpa and its immunoconjugate Hneunpa-trastuzumab for In radiolabeling are synthesized. The ability of p-SCN-Bn-Hneunpa and Hneunpa-trastuzumab to quantitatively radiolabel InCl at an ambient temperature within 15 or 30 min, respectively, is presented. Thermodynamic stability determination with In, Bi, and La resulted in high conditional stability constant (pM) values.
