Long-term monitoring programs of species at risk are efficacious tools to assess population changes, evaluate conservation strategies, and improve management practices to ensure populations reach levels at which they can fulfill their ecological roles. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of chemical (50 articles) and microbial (21 articles) additives on hay preservation during storage. Multilevel linear mixed-effects models were fit with response variables calculated as predicted differences (Δ) between treated and untreated samples. Serine-arginine-rich (SR) proteins are essential for splicing in metazoans but are absent in yeast. By contrast, many fungi have SR protein homologs with variable arginine-rich regions analogous to the arginine-serine-rich (RS) domain in metazoans. The density of RS repeats in these regions correlates with the conservation of the branch site signal, providing evidence for an ancestral origin of SR proteins and indicating that the SR proteins and the branch site co-evolved.

Background: Prognosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is poorly predicted by indices of air flow obstruction, because other factors that reflect the systemic nature of the disease also influence prognosis.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that a reduction in quadriceps maximal voluntary contraction force (QMVC) is a useful predictor of mortality in patients with COPD.

Methods: A mortality questionnaire was sent to the primary care physician of 184 patients with COPD who had undergone quadriceps strength measurement over the past 5 years.
