Characteristics of headache in relation to the manifestation of Susac syndrome.

Susac syndrome is characterized by a clinical triad of encephalopathy, branch retinal artery occlusion, and hearing loss. Due to the absence of the whole complex of the triad in the majority of cases at disease presentation, the syndrome often remains underdiagnosed and untreated. Headache is estimated to affect up to 80% of Susac syndrome patients, but the relevance of headache characteristics and profile is not yet clear.

Diagnostic challenges in multiple system atrophy.

Multiple system atrophy is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by autonomic failure, cerebellar ataxia and parkinsonism syndrome in various combinations. In spite of the presence of well-established clinical criteria for multiple system atrophy, ante-mortem diagnosis is difficult. In our case report, we present a 78-year-old female patient who presented with early progressive aphasia and severe autonomic dysfunction.

Heat transfer and loss by whole-body hyperthermia during severe lower-body heating are impaired in healthy older men.

Most studies demonstrate that aging is associated with a weakened thermoregulation. However, it remains unclear whether heat transfer (for heat loss) from the lower (uncompensable) to the upper (compensable) body during passively-induced severe lower-body heating is delayed or attenuated with aging. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate heat transfer from uncompensable to compensable body areas in young men and healthy older men during passively-induced whole-body hyperthermia with a demonstrated post-heating change in core body (rectal; T) temperature.

Magnetic resonance imaging after most common form of concussion.

Background: Until now there is a lack of carefully controlled studies with conventional MR imaging performed exclusively in concussion with short lasting loss of consciousness (LOC).

Methods: A MR investigation was performed within 24 hours and after 3 months in 20 patients who had suffered a concussion with a verified loss of consciousness of maximally 5 minutes. As a control group, 20 age- and gender matched patients with minor orthopaedic injuries had a MR investigation using the same protocol.

Guidelines for the organization of headache education in Europe: the headache school.

According to its mission statement, one of the goals of the European Headache Federation (EHF) is to "educate Europe" about headache through the teaching of the key health personnel, such as young physicians and all those involved in headache management, about the seriousness of headache disorders. The countries of Europe share a close geographical proximity that facilitates international exchanges, particularly between university faculties. In recent years, this has, indeed, been the working basis of European educational endeavours in the field of headache.

[Wernicke's encephalopathy induced by hyperemesis gravidarum (case report)].

One of the life-threatening complications of hyperemesis gravidarum is Wernicke's encephalopathy, the main etiological factor of which is a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). Most frequently Wernicke's encephalopathy is found among persons suffering from excessive drinking. The aim of the report was to present a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy induced by hyperemesis gravidarum.

Laypersons' expectation of the sequelae of whiplash injury. A cross-cultural comparative study between Canada and Lithuania.

Background: The objective of the present study is to compare the frequency and nature of expected 'whiplash' symptoms in Lithuania (a country where the late whiplash syndrome is rare or unknown) with that in Canada.

Material/methods: A symptom checklist was administered to 2 subject groups selected from local companies in Kaunas, Lithuania, and Edmonton, Canada, respectively. Subjects were asked to imagine having suffered a neck sprain (whiplash injury) with no loss of consciousness in a motor vehicle accident, and to check which, of a variety of symptoms, they would expect might arise from the injury.
