Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a systemic connective tissue disorder caused by mutations in the fibrillin-1 (FBN1) gene, and cardiovascular involvement is the leading cause of mortality. We sought to examine the genotype/phenotype realtionship in 61 consecutive patients with a phenotype and genotype compatible with MFS. The FBN1 gene was analyzed by massive sequencing using a hybridization capture-based target enrichment custom panel.

Identification of Fabry disease (FD) in cardiac patients has been restricted so far to patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. Conduction problems are frequent in FD and could precede other manifestations, offering a possible earlier diagnosis. We studied the prevalence of FD in 188 patients < 70 years with conduction problems requiring pacemaker implantation.

Background: Diagnostic Task Force Criteria (TFC) for arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (AC) exhibit poor performance for left dominant forms. TFC only include right ventricular (RV) dysfunction (akinesia, dyssynchrony, volumes and ejection fraction). Moreover, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) assessment of left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony has hitherto not been described.

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a lethal genetic arrhythmia that manifests syncope or sudden death in children and young adults under stress conditions. CPVT patients often present bradycardia and sino-atrial node (SAN) dysfunction. However, the mechanism remains unclear.

Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) appears to be a new risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Members of a class of non-coding RNAs, termed microRNAs (miRNAs), have been identified as post-transcriptional regulators of cholesterol homoeostasis and can contribute to the development of NAFLD. The aims of this study were to (i) to assess the relationship between NAFLD and sudden cardiac death (SCD) from severe CAD in forensic autopsies and (ii) to quantify several hepatic miRNAs previously associated with lipid metabolism and NAFLD to correlate their expression with the presence of NAFLD, CAD, obesity parameters and postmortem lipid profile.

Aims: The targeted genetic screening of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) probands in a molecular autopsy has a diagnostic yield of up to 35%. Exome sequencing has the potential to improve this yield. The primary aim of this study is to examine the feasibility and diagnostic utility of targeted exome screening in SADS victims, utilizing familial clinical screening whenever possible.

Unexplained cardiac arrest (UCA) can be caused by low-penetrance genetic disorders. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to assess the usefulness of a new diagnostic protocol: Thirty-five patients were recruited from 9 Spanish centers. Electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and coronary catheterization were used to rule out electrical or structural heart disease in all subjects.

Introduction And Objectives: Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia is a malignant disease, due to mutations in proteins controlling Ca(2+) homeostasis. While the phenotype is characterized by polymorphic ventricular arrhythmias under stress, supraventricular arrhythmias may occur and are not fully characterized.

Methods: Twenty-five relatives from a Spanish family with several sudden deaths were evaluated with electrocardiogram, exercise testing, and optional epinephrine challenge.

Background: Irritant hand dermatitis (IHD) is common in health care workers.

Objective: We studied endogenous irritant contact dermatitis threshold by patch testing and exogenous factors such as season and hand washing for their association with IHD in health care workers.

Methods: Irritant patch testing with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium hydroxide, and benzalkonium chloride at varying concentrations was measured in 113 health care workers.

Background/purpose: Pimecrolimus is a topical immunomodulator for atopic dermatitis. Concerns regarding malignancy risk resulted in its black box warning in 2006. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of pimecrolimus on Langerhans cells (LC), mediators of the cutaneous immunity UV-irradiated skin.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the main polyphenol component of green tea. This compound exhibits antioxidant, immunomodulatory, photoprotective, anti-angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties. We conducted a small randomized, double blind, split face trial using a cream containing 2.

Background: Tea polyphenols have been found to exert beneficial effects on the skin via their antioxidant properties.

Aims: We sought to determine whether topical application of green tea or white tea extracts would prevent simulated solar radiation-induced oxidative damages to DNA and Langerhans cells that may lead to immune suppression and carcinogenesis.

Methods: Skin samples were analysed from volunteers or skin explants treated with white tea or green tea after UV irradiation.

Background: Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) has been used for nearly 20 years for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). A substantial body of literature reports that this form of photoimmunotherapy improves or stabilizes the course of disease in a subset of patients across all stages. However, current clinical approach usually reserves ECP for patients who do not respond to other treatments or for patients with late-stage disease or Sézary syndrome (SS).
