As children referred for OLT in Switzerland were not vaccinated optimally, new guidelines were developed and recommended to base catch-up immunization on serum antibody titers against vaccine-preventable diseases, before and after OLT. We measure the results of this serology-based intervention by comparing vaccine coverage and antibody titers in the pre- (1990-2002, P1) and post-intervention (2003-2008, P2) cohorts in a quality control project. Forty-four P1 and 30 P2 children were evaluated.

We ascertained five patients with a novel complex CFTR allele, with two mutations, H939R and H949L, inherited in cis in the same exon of CFTR gene, and one different mutation per patient inherited in trans in a wide population of 289 Caucasian CF subjects from South Italy. The genotype-phenotype relationship in patients bearing this complex allele was investigated.

We characterized the pattern of ultrasonographic contrast enhancement of the small intestinal wall using a commercial contrast medium (Sonovue(®) ) in 10 healthy awake cats. Subjectively, a rapid intense enhancement of the serosal and submucosal layers was followed by gradual enhancement of the entire wall section during the early phase. At peak enhancement, there was a subjective loss of demarcation between intestinal wall layers.

Clinical and radiographic findings were suggestive of pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed marked right-sided cardiac enlargement associated with tricuspid regurgitation and Doppler evidence of pulmonary hypertension.

We describe the ultrasonographic diagnosis of diplomyelia in a 40-day-old calf. The acoustic window was the lumbosacral junction, which, in cattle, corresponds to the L6-S1 intervertebral space and enables the evaluation of approximately 1 cm of the length of the spinal cord. Despite this limited length, this acoustic window yields good anatomic details and can be helpful in assessing anomalies of the caudal aspect of the spinal cord.

Recent data show that activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR)2 and 4 by low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) in the epidermis induces secretion of the antimicrobial peptide β-defensin 2. In the present work, we show that LMW-HA induces vaginal epithelial cells to release different antimicrobial peptides, via activation of TLR2 and TLR4.

An 11-year-old, male, Pekinese was examined because of a sporadic, nonresponsive, nonproductive cough. Radiographically there was cardiomegaly and a soft tissue mass in the cranial mediastinum. Echocardiographically, chronic degenerative valvular disease was diagnosed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease condition leading to right-sided cardiac hypertrophy and, eventually, right-sided heart failure. Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a circulating biomarker of cardiac damage.
Hypothesis: Myocardial damage can occur in dogs with precapillary and postcapillary PH.
Objective: To evaluate radiographic distribution of pulmonary edema (PE) in dogs with mitral regurgitation (MR) and investigate the association between location of radiographic findings and direction of the mitral regurgitant jet (MRJ).
Design: Retrospective case series.
Animals: 61 dogs with cardiogenic PE and MR resulting from mitral valve disease (MVD; 51 dogs), dilated cardiomyopathy (9), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (1).
Deglutition syncope refers to an uncommon cause of neurally mediated syncope induced by swallowing. We briefly review a case of a 66-year-old man who experienced recurrent syncope episodes during ingestion of beverages, mainly water. Our investigations documented several short asymptomatic episodes of asystole and one prolonged complete atrioventricular block of around 15 seconds associated with the syncopal events, during swallowing.

This is due to overrepresentation of injecting drug users (IDUs) in prison and possible HIV-transmission inside prison. Limited health services in penitentiary institutes, stigma, policy issues, and budgetary constraints may hamper delivery of appropriate services for HIV in prison.

Five demographic variables were also inquired. Descriptive statistics and multivariate analyses for the main outcome "acceptance of routine RV immunisation" and other variables were performed.

A thymofibrolipoma is a histological variant of thymolipoma in which there is an additional abundance of fibrous connective tissue. Thymolipoma has been reported previously in one dog and one cat, but thymofibrolipoma has never been described.

Clinical and ultrasonographic findings in seven dogs with histologically confirmed benign mucosal gastric polyps were reviewed.

The remaining serogroups, which mostly lack CT and TCP, are more frequently isolated from aquatic environmental sources than from clinical samples; nevertheless, these strains have been reported to cause human disease, such as sporadic outbreaks of watery diarrhoea and inflammatory enterocolitis. This evidence suggested the possibility that other virulence factor(s) than cholera toxin might be crucial in the pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae-induced diarrhoea, but their nature remains unknown.

Following administration of furosemide and an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, the dog remained free of pleural effusion for 10 months, until he showed severe dyspnea due to chylothorax. Medical therapy was unsuccessful to avoid recurrence of life-threatening pleural chylous effusion.

A commercial ELISA was used for rotavirus detection, while RT-PCRs were used for calicivirus and astrovirus. Of the 74 samples analyzed, 20 were calicivirus positive, 17 were rotavirus positive and one was astrovirus positive.

Survey thoracic radiographs of 90 dogs with a history of cough and clinical and echocardiographic evidence of MVD were evaluated by 2 independent observers. The observers were asked to first determine the origin of the cough as cardiac, non-cardiac or mixed and then to measure the VHS.

Background: Little information is available about the long-term outcome of renal transplantation in adults with Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP).
Methods: We compared the outcomes of 17 patients with HSP who received 19 renal transplants with those of 38 controls matched for time of transplantation, age, gender and source of donor. The mean post-transplant follow-up was 109 +/- 99 months for HSP patients and 110 +/- 78 months for controls.
Brains affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD) show a large spectrum of mitochondrial alterations at both morphological and genetic level. The causal link between amyloid beta peptides (AP) and mitochondrial dysfunction has been established in cellular models of AD using Abeta concentrations capable of triggering massive neuronal death. However, mitochondrial changes related to sublethal exposure to Abeta are less known.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic disease with an autoimmune pathogenesis and an unknown etiology, predominantly affecting postmenopausal women. The term PBC is a misnomer since most cases currently diagnosed have limited probability to develop cirrhosis. Antimitochondrial autoantibodies, elevated IgM and selective destruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts are the hallmarks of PBC.

The aim of this study was to compare IAT and IVT in stroke patients with HMCAS.
Methods: Comparison of data from 2 stroke units with similar management of stroke associated with HMCAS, except that 1 unit performed IAT with urokinase and the other IVT with plasminogen activator.
