Motivation: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been remarkably successful in identifying associations between genetic variants and imaging-derived phenotypes. To date, the main focus of these analyses has been on established, clinically-used imaging features. We sought to investigate if deep learning approaches can detect more nuanced patterns of image variability.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze antibiotic prescribing practices for children under 5 in West African countries using the WHO AWaRe classification, covering data from 15,854 outpatient visits at public primary health centers.
  • - Results showed high rates of antibiotic prescriptions among neonates and young infants, with percentages ranging from 59% to 83% across Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger, and about 93% of prescribed antibiotics being first-choice treatments, mainly amoxicillin.
  • - Conclusions indicate that while high numbers of antibiotics were prescribed, the appropriateness of these prescriptions—and the potential need for further evaluation—remains important, with a minimum threshold of 60% met for the recommended categories in each country. *

Background: Mali is known to be a schistosomiasis-endemic country with a limited supply of clean water. This has forced many communities to rely on open freshwater bodies for many human-water contact (HWC) activities. However, the relationship between contact with these water systems and the level of schistosome infection is currently receiving limited attention.

Schistosomiasis is of medical and veterinary importance. Despite the critical situation of schistosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa, few molecular epidemiological studies have been carried out to determine the role of animals in its transmission. In Mali, it has been over three decades since the last molecular study of animal schistosomes was carried out.

Deep learning (DL) has emerged as a leading approach in accelerating MRI. It employs deep neural networks to extract knowledge from available datasets and then applies the trained networks to reconstruct accurate images from limited measurements. Unlike natural image restoration problems, MRI involves physics-based imaging processes, unique data properties, and diverse imaging tasks.

  • Listeriosis, an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, can lead to a rare form called spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, which was the focus of a nationwide study using data from France between 1993 and 2022.
  • The study included 208 patients diagnosed with L monocytogenes-associated peritonitis and found that most were older males with significant immunosuppressive health issues, particularly cirrhosis and alcoholism.
  • The symptoms were often mild or vague, with only half of the patients showing common signs like fever or abdominal pain, highlighting the challenges in diagnosing this condition.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic profile of Schistosoma haematobium in school-aged children in Mali, focusing on two identified endemic villages.
  • Researchers collected urine samples and used molecular techniques to analyze miracidia, revealing a mix of 42% Schistosoma bovis and 58% S. haematobium, with a significant variation in genetic profiles between the two villages.
  • The findings highlight a notable prevalence of hybrid schistosome strains, indicating the need for further research on genetic interactions and their impact on schistosomiasis transmission and epidemiology in the region.

Background: The AIRE operational project will evaluate the implementation of the routine Pulse Oximeter (PO) use in the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) strategy for children under-5 in primary health care centers (PHC) in West Africa. The introduction of PO should promote the accurate identification of hypoxemia (pulse blood oxygen saturation Sp02 < 90%) among all severe IMCI cases (respiratory and non-respiratory) to prompt their effective case management (oxygen, antibiotics and other required treatments) at hospital. We seek to understand how the routine use of PO integrated in IMCI outpatients works (or not), for whom, in what contexts and with what outcomes.
