Dynamics of the HIV-1 variability in adults from Bucharest, 1992-1998.

Variability is a hallmark of HIV viruses both at the genetic and the phenotypic level. Viral sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of many isolates revealed specific distribution of HIV-1 subtypes according to the geographic location and route of transmission. In Romania, the currently available data coming from the study of pediatric HIV infection suggest the predominance of subtype F.

Low rates of seroconversion after hepatitis B vaccination in orphanges with high prevalence of virus carriers.

A serosurvey of Hepatitis B infection markers was conducted in two orphanages that adhered to Hepatitis B vaccination policy. In spite of comparable sizes (80-90 children per facility), housing conditions and infection control practices, the level of HbsAg endemicity was different in each unit in direct relation with the mean age of the children. The prevalence of HbsAg carriers and the interval spent in collectivity strongly affect the seroconversion rate after HB vaccination.

Hepatitis C is and will be a major public health concern. Confirmed infections were reported from all Romanian counties but important differences between regions raise several explanations. Differences may reflect the different levels of testing, the performances of laboratories in confirming initially reactive samples or the risk factors higher prevalence.

Phagocytic function of monocytes in children with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection.

We investigated the phagocytic function of monocytes in 7- to 10-year-old children horizontally infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in comparison to that in healthy sex- and age-matched controls. CR3-mediated phagocytosis was increased in patients with HIV-associated pulmonary tuberculosis, independently of CD4 counts and p24 antigenemia.

Apoptosis is induced in both drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant hepatoma cells by somatostatin analogue TT-232.

Clinical resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs is an important problem in the treatment of cancer; the circumvention of resistance has become one of the basic goals of cancer therapy. The most frequent form of primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which is essentially refractory to chemotherapy. We earlier showed that TT-232, a new somatostatin analogue developed in our laboratory, exerted a strong antiproliferative effect both in vitro and in vivo, but no growth hormone release inhibitory or antisecretory activity.

Spectral and interferometrical study of the interaction of haemin with glutathione.

The interaction of haemin with reduced glutathione (GSH) was investigated in vitro and the association constant was determined by both spectrophotometric and interferometric methods. In order to elucidate the nature of this interaction, the reaction of haemin with a typical reductive agent (sodium dithionite) and a typical chelating agent for hem-iron (histidine) was also studied. Haemin-induced haemolysis in the presence and absence of GSH was monitored spectrophotometrically.

Flow-cytometry DNA index of colorectal carcinomas.

The authors investigated the relationship between flow cytometric DNA index (D.I.-defined as the ratio of the DNA content of malignant cells to that of normal cells) and other prognostic factors (grade, stage of the disease, anatomical site, patients' sex and age) of 20 patients with colorectal cancer.

Studies on the intermolecular forces involved in the antibody-antigen interactions, using V3 synthetic peptides and sera from HIV1 seropositive patients.

The nature of physical forces responsible for the antibody-antigen (Ab-Ag) reaction was analyzed in an original system, represented by synthetic peptides derived from the V3 consensus sequences of some HIV1 subtypes gp 120 and HIV1 positive human serum. For locating antigenic determines, flexibility, hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity profiles of the V3 peptides were analysed. The hydrophilicity indicates that V3 apex borders are involved in the first stage of the reaction.

[The action of amphiphilic drugs on human fibroblasts in vitro. Their possible use in antiviral and antitumor chemotherapy].

The LDH cytotoxicity test is able to emphasize the stabilisation of human embryo fibroblast membranes, in vitro, by two amphiphilic drugs: the metomidate and the thymolol. The membrane stabilisation is emphasized by the reduced LDH externalization as compared with the untreated cells. The use of the LDH test for the selection of some natural complexes or synthetic drugs with membrane stabilising and potential antiviral activity is proposed.

[The diagnosis and treatment of benign tumors of the subdiaphragmatic digestive tract].

One hundred twenty-two benign tumors of subdiaphragmatic digestive tract admitted in the interval 1975-1988 at the III-rd Surgical Clinic of Iaşi are reported. Out of these patients 120 required surgical treatment, the remainder of 2 being treated conservatively (diffuse intestinal angiomatosis, Peutz-Jeghers' syndrome). The clinical evolution being atypical, the surgical intervention was required, in most of the cases, due to hemorrhagic and occlusive complications.

[Gastric stump cancer].

The cases of gastric stump cancer recorded at the III-rd Surgical Clinic of Iaoi during the last 5 years are analysed. Based upon the personal experience and data in the literature 7 cases are discussed. Out of the 7 cases, in 3 an initial resection for gastric ulcer and in 4 for duodenal ulcer was performed 17-40 years previously (with an average of 26 years).

[Cancer of the upper gastric pole--possibilities and limitations].

An analysis of the cases encountered over the last 5 years revealed a high frequency of gastric cancers located in the upper pole area of the stomach. These represented 23% of all gastric cancers. The low number of cases with this localization that could benefit from gastric resection (38,7%), in contrast with distal locations (65,4%) suggest either late detection or high invading potential of these cancers.
