Background: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic infection with a difficult diagnosis, rapid progression, high mortality rate and poor prognosis. The primary treatment and prevention of PCP is trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ).
