Intraoperative neurological pupil index and postoperative delirium and neurologic adverse events after cardiac surgery: an observational study.

Neurological pupil index (NPi) calculated by automated pupillometry predicts clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. However, there are few data on intraoperative NPi and postoperative outcome after cardiac surgery. We evaluated the relationships between intraoperative NPi and clinical outcomes, such as delirium, in cardiac surgery patients.

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on myocardial protection in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement: a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Cardiopulmonary bypass-related myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury is a major contributor to postoperative morbidity. Although transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been found to have cardioprotective effects in animal studies and healthy volunteers, its effects on cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass patients have not been evaluated. We investigated the effects of TENS on myocardial protection in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass.

Heart rate variability and oxygen reserve index during cardiorespiratory events in patients undergoing ophthalmic arterial chemotherapy: a prospective observational study.

Unexpected cardiorespiratory compromise has been reported during ophthalmic arterial chemotherapy in pediatric patients with retinoblastoma. Although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, autonomic responses are presumed to contribute to these events. We hypothesized that periprocedural heart rate variability would differ between patients with and without events.

Intraoperative glucose variability, but not average glucose concentration, may be a risk factor for acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery: a retrospective study.

Purpose: Altered perioperative glycemic control may contribute to the development of renal dysfunction in cardiac surgery patients. The effects of ipsilateral tilt position on right subclavian venous catheterization: study protocol for a prospective randomized trial.

Background: The cross-sectional area of the subclavian vein (csSCV) is an important factor determining the success rate of SCV catheterization. The head-down position increases the csSCV. However, the effects of lateral tilting on subclavian venous cross-sectional area have not yet been explored.

Assessment of the Surveillance Interval at 1 Year after Curative Treatment in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Risk Stratification.

Background/aims: Guidelines recommend surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence at 3-month intervals during the first year after curative treatment and 6-month intervals thereafter in all patients. This strategy does not reflect individual risk of recurrence. We aimed to stratify risk of recurrence to optimize surveillance intervals 1 year after treatment.

Positive end-expiratory pressure-induced increase in external jugular venous pressure does not predict fluid responsiveness in laparoscopic prostatectomy.

Background: Dynamic change in central venous pressure (CVP) was associated with fluid responsiveness. External jugular venous pressure (EJVP) may reliably estimate CVP and have the advantages of being less invasive. We investigated whether increase in EJVP induced by positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) could be a reliable predictor of fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP).

Risk of non-cardiac surgery after percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents.

Elective non-cardiac surgery (NCS) should optimally be delayed one year after implantation of a drug-eluting stent (DES). Dual antiplatelet therapy or at least aspirin is recommended to be continued considering the relative risk of stent thrombosis especially during the 4 weeks after DES implantation. However, these recommendations were supported by insufficient evidence.

Neutrophil, Lymphocyte, and Platelet Counts and Acute Kidney Injury After Cardiovascular Surgery.

Objective: Postoperative low platelet count and perioperative high neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio are associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality after cardiac surgery. The authors investigated whether (1) their combination neutrophil/lymphocyte × platelet (N/LP) ratio is an independent predictor of AKI and postoperative mortality and (2) whether the N/LP ratio increases predictive ability compared with the N/L ratio or platelet nadir.

Design: This was a retrospective and observational study.

Interaction between FEZ1 and DISC1 in regulation of neuronal development and risk for schizophrenia.

Disrupted-in Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), a susceptibility gene for major mental disorders, encodes a scaffold protein that has a multifaceted impact on neuronal development. How DISC1 regulates different aspects of neuronal development is not well understood. Here, we show that Fasciculation and Elongation Protein Zeta-1 (FEZ1) interacts with DISC1 to synergistically regulate dendritic growth of newborn neurons in the adult mouse hippocampus, and that this pathway complements a parallel DISC1-NDEL1 interaction that regulates cell positioning and morphogenesis of newborn neurons.

Citicoline reduces upregulated clusterin following kainic acid injection in the rat retina.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of citicoline on upregulated clusterin and retinal damage induced by kainic acid (KA).

Methods: KA was injected into the vitreous of rats. Effects of systemic citicoline treatments were estimated by measuring the thickness of the various retinal layers, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemical techniques.
