Pupal stages of Simulium were collected and identified from various breeding habitats of twelve locations in northeastern India. Simulium flies, while attempting to land on human were collected between 07:00-17:00 hrs to understand the biting pattern. Seven species belonging to three sub-genera, Eusimulium (1), Gomphostilbia (1) and Simulium (5) belonging genus Simulium were encountered.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of lignin was performed using methanol and ethanol at various temperatures (200, 250 and 280°C) and residence times of 15, 30 and 45min. Maximum liquid product yield (85%) was observed at 200°C and 15min residence time using methanol. Increase in temperature was seen to decrease the liquid products yield.

Article Synopsis
  • A new strain of fungus, Pholiota adiposa SKU0714, was isolated and identified for its ability to secrete a highly efficient β-1,4-mannanase enzyme.
  • The enzyme was purified using a specialized chromatography technique, and it demonstrated the highest recorded activity toward locust bean gum, classifying it as part of the glycoside hydrolase family 5 (GH5).
  • When compared to a commercial enzyme, the β-1,4-mannanase from P. adiposa released more reducing sugars from pretreated rice straw, suggesting its potential for improving biomass pretreatment in commercial applications.

The present study evaluates the performance of OptiMAL-IT test and nested PCR assay in detection of malaria parasites. A total of 76 randomly selected blood samples collected from two malaria endemic areas were tested for malaria parasites using microscopy and OptiMAL-IT test in the field. PCR assays were performed in the laboratory using DNA extracted from blood spots of the same samples collected on the FTA classic cards.

Background: Mosquito repellents and emanators confer protection against mosquito bites through spatial action of emanated vapours which are released into the adjoining environment. Synthetic insecticides released into the environment in ultra low volume vapour phase deter the mosquitoes from biting humans in a protected space.

Methods: Formulation patches were prepared using the solvent evaporation method over a backing membrane and using Dibutylphthalate (DBT) as a plasticizer.

An efficient synthetic approach to diheteroarylmethanes and 1,3-diheteroarylpropenes has been developed via Yb(III)-catalyzed sequential self-condensation of 2-furfuryl (or 2-thienyl or 3-indolyl) alcohols followed by intramolecular Friedel-Crafts type reaction and elimination of an aldehyde. This method offers a powerful entry and a potential alternative to the traditional synthesis of diheteroarylalkanes, which are precursors to the synthesis of several intriguing heteroaryls and more significantly, to the synthesis of biofuels.

An unusual Brønsted acid catalyzed benzofuran ring opening and furan ring closure sequence for the formation of tri- and tetrasubstituted furans is presented. Benzofuranyl carbinols and 1,3-dicarbonyls in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid generated functionalized, polysubstituted furans in good to excellent yields via an unusual benzofuran ring opening and furan recyclization process. This reaction is found to be general even on furyl carbinols; however, it generates the rearranged polysubstituted furans in moderate yields.

The genus Simulium, black fly (Diptera), comprises >1800 species worldwide, of which 67 species under six subgenera have been well studied in India. While at the extreme, black fly bites can cause onchocerciasis or river blindness, the majority of clinical observations indicate mainly severe pain and continuous itching at bite sites. This investigation experimentally observed that black fly salivary extract (BFSE) causes unique biologic effects including immunomodulation, anti-coagulation, and hypersensitivity reactions in Wistar rats.

India reports the highest number of malaria cases in Southeast Asia, of which Plasmodium falciparum contribute more than half of the cases every year. North eastern states of India contribute only 3.96% of country's population but account for >10% of total reported malaria cases, 11% of Plasmodium falciparum cases and 20% of malaria related deaths annually.

Furfuryl cations are generated via a highly efficient bismuth-catalyzed reaction of furfuryl alcohols. This systematic study provides insight on the reactivity profile of furfuryl cations towards nucleophilic substitution reactions. Novel C-C, C-N, C-O and C-S bond forming reactions of furfuryl cations have been developed, thus providing access to a diverse array of building blocks for further manipulations.

Background & Objectives: Simuliids (Diptera) are one of the medically important biting insects group and have worldwide distribution. Their immature stages proliferate in fast flowing river or stream water and have been considered as important ecological indicator.

Methods: Aquatic stages of simuliids were collected and speciated from 16 different fresh water rivers and streams.

The radiolytic production of molecular hydrogen in the ionic liquids N-trimethyl-N-butylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([N1114][Tf2N]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([emim][Tf2N]) has been examined with γ-rays, 2-10 MeV protons, and 5-20 MeV helium ions to determine the functional dependence of the yield on particle track structure. Molecular hydrogen is the dominant gaseous radiolysis product from these ionic liquids, and the yields with γ-rays are 0.73 and 0.

Vitex negundo is a common herb in different herbal formulation. The potential acute and sub-chronic dermal toxicities were evaluated as per OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) guidelines 402 and 411, respectively. Both sexes of Wistar rats were exposed to Vitex negundo oil of 2000 mg/kg body weight for acute dermal toxicity, whereas in the dermal sub-chronic toxicity study, rats were exposed to Vitex negundo oil 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight, respectively, for five times a week for 90 d.

  • - A new strain called Armillaria gemina KJS114 was identified as a producer of a specific enzyme called endo-β-1,4-glucanase (EG), which was purified and characterized for its properties.
  • - The enzyme's molecular mass was found to be around 65-66 kDa, and it functions best at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 60 °C, showing high efficiency when breaking down carboxymethylcellulose.
  • - The study indicates that adding this enzyme to existing commercial cellulase mixtures enhances sugar production from plant materials, suggesting its potential use in converting biomass into biofuels and chemicals.

Malaria remains a complex problem during the pregnancy, which threatens > 35 millions pregnant women every year. Malaria pathogenesis in pregnancy results in accumulation of infected RBCs in the intervillous spaces causing severe alterations leading to the reduced materno-foetal exchanges. In this article we have revisited the current evidences of clinical implications and overall burden of malaria in pregnancy.
