Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a rare congenital heart disease (CHD) that occurs in persons with large intracardiac anatomical defects which may go undetected for many years, consequently results in reduced life expectancies and high mortality in the third and fourth decade of life. Pregnancy in patients with CHD and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is presaged with challenges, and perioperative management of such cases remains a topic of debate. Our case had both, atypical presentation, not diagnosed until her third trimester of third pregnancy and a quick progression to a severe stage with PAH and CorPulmonale.

The integration of palliative care into routine oncology practice is the standard of care by most leading cancer organizations. Palliative medicine helps to deliver higher quality of care at a lower cost. However, there are barriers to implementing palliative oncology at many institutions for myriad reasons.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women in multiple countries including the United States. Women are exposed to unique risk factors that remain largely understudied such as indoor pollution, second-hand tobacco exposure, biological differences, gender differences in tolerability and response to therapy in lung cancer, and societal gender roles, that create distinct survivorship needs. Women continue to lack representation in lung cancer clinical trials and are typically treated with data generated from majority male patient study populations, which may be inappropriate to extrapolate and generalize to females.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to find variables that predict long-lasting success after treating uterine fibroids using MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS).
  • In a trial with 99 women, researchers measured changes in symptom severity over 36 months and developed the NPV/TFL ratio to assess its impact on treatment outcomes.
  • Results showed that a higher ratio of non-perfused volume to total fibroid load and lower fibroid volume were linked to significant symptom improvement, with the NPV/TFL ratio being the strongest predictor of long-term clinical success.

The incidence and mortality of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus has been gradually increasing globally over the last few decades. The evolution of different modalities, including immunotherapies, has changed the treatment paradigm of metastatic anal cancers. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immune-modulating therapies form the backbone of treatment of anal cancer in various stages.

COVID-19 has been devastating for patients with cancer. In this commentary, we chronicle the pandemic's downstream impacts on United States hematology/oncology trainees in terms of professional development and career advancement. These include loss of access to clinical electives and protocol workshops, delays in research approval and execution, mentor shortages due to academic burnout, and obstacles with career transitions (most notably the post-fellowship job search).

The massive generation of electronic waste has led to a significant interest in sustainable metal recovery and recycling. Ball grid arrays, mounted on printed circuit boards, are identified as a potentially valuable source of metals (Cu, Ni, Au, Ag, Pb, and Sn). In this study, pyrolysis is found as a promising treatment for the degradation of the epoxy resin of ball grid arrays.

The university is a highly politicized and fractious realm for students and academics. Amidst trade-offs between the processes of massification, democratization, commodification, and globalization, the question of transformation sustainability has become crucial to the social good(s) of higher education. This paper considers academic citizenry within Indian public higher education - a context where the increase in the enrollment of first-generation students and female students, due to affirmative action policies, has not substantially translated into altering the composition of academic staff.

Objective: One of the key metrics that is used to predict the likelihood of success of MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is the overall calvarial skull density ratio (SDR). However, this measure does not fully predict the sonication parameters that would be required or the technical success rates. The authors aimed to assess other skull characteristics that may also contribute to technical success.

(MG) is an emerging sexually transmitted pathogen. It is an important cause of nongonococcal urethritis in men and is associated with cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women, putting them at risk of infertility. Multiple factors that aid pathogenesis of MG include its ability of adhesion, gliding motility, and intracellular invasion by means of the tip organelle.

We sought to assess breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections in vaccinated individuals by variant distribution and to identify the common risk associations. The PubMed, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Embase databases were searched from 2019 to 30 January 2022. The outcome of interest was breakthrough infections (BTIs) in individuals who had completed a primary COVID-19 vaccination series.

Background: The proportion of women in the field of hematology and oncology (H&O) has increased over recent decades, but the representation of women in leadership positions remains poor. In an effort to close the gender gap in academia, it is important to report on such inequities in hopes to close these gaps and improve career development.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study of published award recipients from 1994 to 2019 from the seven major H&O societies in the world.

Metastatic breast cancer initially may present with cutaneous lesions. The goal of this systematic review was to evaluate available reports where the initial discovery of primary breast cancer occurred through the diagnosis of metastatic cutaneous lesions. We aimed to better understand these cases and the role of dermatologists in their diagnosis.

Discussions involving racial health disparities must include pathways for engaging in shared decision-making with racial/ethnic minorities. Research demonstrates glaring racial and ethnic disparities when it comes to hematologic malignancies from the time of diagnosis to treatment and even at the end of life. Unfortunately, decision-making in these circumstances may be streamlined, given the urgency of the disease, prognostic uncertainty, and varying treatment options.

Considerable evidence has demonstrated that gender influences interactions during in-person meetings, most commonly, negatively impacting women and persons of color. Pervasive gender stereotypes about roles that were (and are) occupied by men and women lead to implicit assumptions about competency in said roles. For example, women may receive more negative verbal interruptions or nonverbal cues that undermine their authority as a leader, a stereotypically male-typed role.

Purpose: Family/caregiver visitation provides critical support for patients confronting cancer and is associated with positive outcomes. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought historic disruptions including widespread visitation restrictions. Here, we characterize in-depth the visitor policies of NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers (CCCs) and analyze geographic/temporal patterns across CCCs.

Mycoplasma hominis, a commensal of the genital tract, is a potential underestimated pathogen causing both genitourinary and extragenital infections including neonatal infections. Septic arthritis, prosthetic joint infection, central nervous system (CNS) infections, infective endocarditis and abscess formation are common extragenital infections associated mainly with immunocompromised patients. Mycoplasma hominis lipoproteins play an important role in pathogenicity and directly interact with the host immune system.
