The host immune system is adapted in a variety of ways by tumour microenvironment and growing tumour interacts to promote immune escape. One of these adaptations is manipulating the metabolic processes of cells in the tumour microenvironment. The growing tumour aggressively utilise glucose, its primary energy source available in tumour site, and produce lactate by Warburg effect.

Article Synopsis
  • Elevated stress in plants impairs growth by hindering cell division in the root meristem, influenced by a signaling molecule called Plant Elicitor Peptide (PEP).
  • RNA sequencing of roots treated with PEP revealed that the gene SALT TOLERANCE ZINC FINGER (STZ) plays a key role in connecting stress responses to cell cycle regulation.
  • Research shows STZ manages cell differentiation and stress-response genes, offering insights for developing plants better able to withstand environmental stress.

Ecytonucleospora hepatopenaei (EHP), a microsporidian parasite first named and characterized from the Penaeus monodon (black or giant tiger shrimp), causes growth retardation and poses a significant threat to shrimp farming. We observed shrimp farms associated with disease conditions during our fish disease surveillance and health management program in West Bengal, India. Shrimp exhibited growth retardation and increased size variability, particularly in advanced stages, exhibiting soft shells, lethargy, reduced feeding and empty midguts.

Introduction: Deep mycoses acquired by penetrating trauma to the skin can have varied and sometimes atypical morphological presentations resulting in diagnostic dilemmas and delay in treatment onset. Histopathology can be a useful tool in not only diagnosing but also differentiating various deep mycoses.

Aims And Objectives: To observe various morphological presentations and histopathological features of deep fungal infections.

  • Flatbush diabetes is an emerging and significant type of diabetes that is gaining attention worldwide, often confused with type 1 diabetes due to similar symptoms.
  • It's important to recognize the differences between Flatbush diabetes, type 1, and type 2 diabetes for better early diagnosis and treatment strategies.
  • A rare case study highlighted a young male experiencing recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) during febrile illnesses, underscoring the need for more awareness and research on Flatbush diabetes.

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 evades the host immune system by expressing a protein, ICP47, that binds to and inhibits the heterodimeric Transporter Associated with Antigen Processing (TAP). We screened a library of 1786 variants in TAP2, one of the components of the TAP heterodimer, and identified 39 variants that were resistant to inhibition by ICP47. Of these 39 variants, five were individually tested, and three (T257I, S274H, and T244R) were confirmed to be significantly resistant to inhibition by ICP47.

Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), a vital chaperone involved in the folding and stabilization of various cellular proteins, regulates key functions in many tumor cells. In the context of gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), where HSP90's role remains largely unexplored, we aimed to investigate the significance of HSP90 inhibitor, AUY922, in regulating the YAP1/TEAD pathway and its association with the tumor immune microenvironment (TME). Our results showed that AUY922 effectively inhibited GAC aggressiveness in both the invitro and invivo models, induced apoptosis, and cell-cycle arrest.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis with an unclear origin primarily affecting young children. The sole difference between complete and incomplete KD upon presentation is the number of signs and symptoms. There is a concerning case of a 50-year-old male with incomplete KD who has additionally presented with a stroke.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are low-level signals generated from active processes related to outer hair cell transduction in the cochlea. In current clinical applications, OAEs are typically used to detect the presence or absence of hearing loss. However, their potential extends far beyond hearing screenings.

Article Synopsis
  • - Viral diseases in farmed fish, particularly Tilapia Parvovirus (TiPV), are causing major problems in aquaculture, leading to high fish mortality and economic losses in regions like West Bengal and Odisha, India.
  • - During investigations, symptomatic tilapia showed signs like hemorrhage and discoloration, with TiPV confirmed through various analyses, causing severe damage to multiple organs including the liver, heart, and spleen.
  • - The study found that TiPV infection activates certain immune responses, but many immune genes are significantly downregulated in severely affected fish, highlighting the virus's detrimental impact on tilapia health.

Scrub typhus continues to pose a significant threat to life, manifesting in a spectrum that ranges from mild, non-specific febrile illness to severe multi-organ dysfunction. Although neuropsychiatric symptoms are rare in cases of scrub typhus, we present a unique case involving a 60-year-old male who initially exhibited fever and headache, subsequently developing neuropsychiatric symptoms on the third day of hospitalization. Following the exclusion of prevalent metabolic, autoimmune, and infectious conditions, he was diagnosed with hypoactive delirium associated with scrub typhus.

Background: Despite growing concern regarding over-prescription of narcotic pain medication following ambulatory surgery, little is known about the analgesic prescribing practices following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in obese patients in comparison to non-obese patients.

Objective: To compare the rates of opioid versus non-opioid prescriptions, the need for steroids, and post-operative adverse events between obese and non-obese adult patients undergoing ESS.

Methods: Using TriNetX Live database, we identified all patients aged ≥18 years who underwent ESS (n = 1303) between 2014 and 2022 across several healthcare institutions across the state of Tennessee.

Mitochondria play important roles in the maintenance of cellular health. In cancer, these dynamic organelles undergo significant changes in terms of membrane hyperpolarization, altered metabolic functions, fusion-fission balance, and several other parameters. These alterations promote cancer growth, proliferation and spread, and the eventual development of metastatic disease and therapeutic resistance.

Objective: To enhance primary care dentistry and medicine residents' didactic knowledge, communication skills to address patient's healthcare needs, and collaboration among healthcare professionals, while increasing confidence in integrating primary care skills into their clinical practice.

Methods: An Interprofessional Education workshop was organized to enhance didactic knowledge and learning of 42 primary care dentistry (PCD) and family and community medicine (FCM) residents on topics including addressing facial and dental trauma in adults, managing patients with alcohol use and abuse, pain control and prescription opioid use in dentistry, and opioid use disorder and treatment. An online survey was administered before and after the workshop to assess changes in knowledge, confidence, and future intentions to incorporate targeted primary care skills learned during the workshop into clinical practice and to elicit residents' perceptions of workshop quality.
