Background: The most common cause of death in those with cystic fibrosis (CF) is respiratory failure due to bronchiectasis resulting from repeated cycles of respiratory infection and inflammation. Protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is a cell surface receptor activated by serine proteases including neutrophil elastase, which is recognised as a potent modulator of inflammation. While PAR1 is known to play an important role in regulating inflammation, nothing is known about any potential role of this receptor in CF pathogenesis.

Dual activation of the TLR7 and TLR8 pathways leads to the production of type I interferon and proinflammatory cytokines, resulting in efficient antigen presentation by dendritic cells to promote T-cell priming and antitumor immunity. We developed a novel series of TLR7/8 dual agonists with varying ratios of TLR7 and TLR8 activity for use as payloads for an antibody-drug conjugate approach. Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare pulmonary vascular complication of chronic liver disease characterized by dilatation of pulmonary capillaries leading to vascular shunting and systemic hypoxemia. Diagnosis of HPS requires documentation of intrapulmonary vasodilation (IPVD), the two most common imaging studies performed for the detection of IPVD include transthoracic contrast echocardiography (TTCE) and 99m-Tc-macroaggregated albumin scintigraphy (99mTc-MAA scan). TTCE has high sensitivity and thus, is the preferred initial investigation, while 99mTc-MAA scan is highly specific and plays an adjuvant role in diagnosis.

Metal complexes activated by light can combat infections by triggering the photodynamic inactivation of bacteria. Herein, we report six mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes with the formulation [Ni(NN)(L)] (1-6), where NN represents an N,N-donor phenanthroline ligand, specifically 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1, 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 3, 4), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 5, 6), while L is an O,O donor bidentate ligand derived from catechol (cat, in 1, 3, 5) or esculetin (esc, in 2, 4, 6). The paramagnetic d octahedral complexes demonstrated good dark and photostability in the solution phase and exhibited significant light absorption in the visible (400-700 nm) region.

We explore the intricate dynamics of imbibition by a viscoelastic electrolyte within an arbitrarily oriented, nonuniform microcapillary, while under the stimulus of external electromagnetic fields and internal electroviscous forces stemming from streaming potential. The propensity of protein-based biologics to form protein particles during bioprocessing can be related to their interfacial properties. In this study, we compare the surface activity and interfacial film properties of two structurally different biologics, an IgG and Fc-fusion, in the absence and presence of interfacial dilatational stresses, and correlate these differences to their tendency to form interface-induced protein particles. Our results show that interface-induced particle formation is protein-dependent, with the Fc-fusion demonstrating greater interfacial stability.

In this article, we develop and solve an analytical model to understand the elasto-hydrodynamic force response of a deformable, soft substrate, under dynamic loading; wherein the microfluidic gap between the substrate and load is subjected to electro-magneto-hydrodynamic interactions. As a simple physical system, we model the coupled fluid-structure-interaction characteristics when a rigid, small cylinder is permitted to impinge harmonically on an infinitely large elastic, soft substrate, and an oscillatory, squeeze flow establishes in the micro-gap formed between the two. We discuss the different observations and mechanics in terms of the governing Dukhin, Hartmann, and electroviscous numbers.

Generation of voluminous single-use plastic waste and byproducts from agricultural harvests such as rice straws (RSs) are major global challenges due to their disposal issues, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and affecting the ecological system with threats to human health. A scalable, low-cost, and eco-friendly strategy for fabricating cellulose-silica-based drinking straws, free from microplastics and adhesive, through strategic valorization of RS is reported. Functionalization by delignification--crosslinking of RS leads to development of straws with high water stability (∼5 days), solvothermal stability (0°C-95°C), tensile strength (128 MPa), low migration values (<60 mg/kg), improved biodegradability (∼126 days) with reduced wettability and hydrophobicity.
