Purpose: To evaluate the results and safety profile of assistant medical officer ophthalmologists (AMO-O) performing cataract surgery in the last stage of their surgical training, before their appointment to local communities.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the records of patients who underwent cataract surgery by AMO-Os at Dar es Salaam, Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation for Tanzania Disability Hospital between September 2008 and June 2011. Surgical options were either extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) or manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), both with polymethylmethacrylate intraocular lens implantation.
Introduction: In an African setting surgery is generally accepted as the treatment of first choice for glaucoma. For this purpose, Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated orally, with vitamin A or vitamin C for 21 days, and their effects on ventricular arrhythmias induced by a bolus dose or cumulative doses of intravenous epinephrine were examined. Electrocardiogram recording of these animals revealed that pretreatment with either of these vitamins increased the time of onset and decreased the duration of the epinephrine-induced ventricular arrhythmias.

Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated for 21 days with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) or vitamin E to investigate their influence on arrhythmias induced by a bolus injection or by cumulative doses of epinephrine. Electrocardiographic analysis revealed that both NAC and vitamin E decreased the duration and increased the time of onset of epinephrine-induced arrhythmias in a dose-dependent manner. The antiarrhythmic effects of NAC were comparable with those seen in the vitamin E-pretreated animals.

The occurrence of excessive catecholamine release is often associated with stress due to the lifestyle of Western societies. Contrary to the general thinking that excess catecholamines produce cardiotoxicity mainly via binding to adrenoceptors, there is increasing evidence that catecholamine-induced deleterious actions may also occur through oxidative mechanisms. Alamethicin is commonly used as an agent for unmasking the latent enzyme activities in vesicular membrane preparations; however, relatively little is known about the effect of this agent on the characteristics of adenylyl cyclase in heart sarcolemma. By employing rat heart sarcolemmal preparation, we observed 5 to 6 fold increase in adenylyl cyclase activity upon treatment with alamethicin. Kinetic experiments using various concentrations of MgATP revealed that the increase in adenylyl cyclase activity in alamethicin treated membranes was associated with an increase in Vmax as well as affinity of the substrate for the enzyme.
