Background: Immune rejection represents a significant barrier to transplantation, especially in the context of xenotransplantation. Endothelial cells (ECs) derived from pigs serve as the initial barrier against the human immune system in xenotransplantation. Tight junction proteins are essential components of endothelial cell tight junctions; however, their role in xenotransplantation has been less thoroughly investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and decompensated cirrhosis (DC) are severe complications of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, marked by metabolic disturbances in the liver and beyond.
  • A study analyzed serum samples and liver tissues from patients with HBV-ACLF, HBV-DC, and control groups to explore metabolic changes, highlighting impairments in energy, amino acid, and pyrimidine metabolism specific to ACLF/DC.
  • The research found that both conditions share similar abnormal serum metabolite profiles linked to inflammation and metabolic dysfunction, with unique markers for each, suggesting a connection between liver pathology and systemic inflammatory response.

The electrocatalytic CO reduction (ECR) to produce valuable fuel is a promising process for addressing atmospheric CO emissions and energy shortages. In this study, Cl-anion doped cadmium sulfide structures were directly fabricated on a nickel foam surface (Cl/CdS-NF) using an in situ hydrothermal method. The Cl-anion doping could significantly improve ECR activity for CO production in ionic liquid and acetonitrile mixed solution, compared to pristine CdS.

We have previously demonstrated a rapid secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in the ischemic brain. Since Scube2 can interact with Sonic hedgehog (Shh) to maintain blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity via regulating the interaction between brain capillary endothelial cells (ECs) and perivascular astrocytes, and it is also a substrate of MMP-2, we hypothesized that the secreted MMP-2 could degrade Scube2 and contribute to ischemic BBB disruption. Using an in vitro ischemic model of 90-min oxygen-glucose deprivation/3-h reoxygenation (OGD/R) and an in vivo mouse stroke model of 90-min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with 3-h reperfusion, we established an important role of MMP-2-mediated Scube2 degradation in early ischemic BBB disruption.

Unlabelled: The mechanisms underlying the ability of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to rapidly activate lineage-specific genes during differentiation remain largely unknown. Through multiple CRISPR-activation screens, we discovered human ESCs have pre-established transcriptionally competent chromatin regions (CCRs) that support lineage-specific gene expression at levels comparable to differentiated cells. CCRs reside in the same topological domains as their target genes.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a promising platform for electrocatalytic CO conversion are still restricted by the low efficiency or unsatisfied selectivity for desired products. Herein, zirconium-based porphyrinic MOF hollow nanotubes with Cd sites (Cd-PCN-222HTs) are reported for electrocatalytic CO -to-CO conversion. The dispersed Cd species are anchored in PCN-222HTs and coordinated by N atoms of porphyrin structures.

The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO ) is a sustainable method for generating valuable chemicals; however, avoiding unwanted hydrogen (H ) production during the electrolysis is a major challenge. Coproduction of carbon monoxide (CO) and H to produce syngas is an effective strategy for solving this problem, and syngas with a desired CO/H ratio can be employed to produce methanol or other valuable chemicals. Herein, a series of palladium-bismuth (Pd-Bi) bimetallic nanochains with different Pd/Bi atomic ratios were prepared and used in the electroreduction of CO to syngas in ionic liquid-based electrolytes.
