Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the genetic characteristics of urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGLs) in a cohort of 70 Chinese patients, aiming to better understand their heritability and genetic variations.
  • Results show that 38 patients had pathogenic variants (PVs), mainly in cluster 1A genes like SDHB and HRAS, with UBPGLs showing higher PV rates in cluster 1A compared to non-head and neck PGLs.
  • The findings indicate a diverse genetic profile among Chinese patients with UBPGLs, emphasizing the necessity for genetic testing to identify significant pathogenic variants.

Objective: To analyze the factors influencing recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children and explore predictive factors and intervention measures.

Methods: Data of 158 children with UTIs treated at the Longyan First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University from January 2020 to June 2023 were analyzed. Among them, 122 children without recurrent UTIs were included in a non-recurrent group, while the remaining 36 were included in a recurrent group.

Article Synopsis
  • - The PROpel study indicates that combining abiraterone and olaparib shows benefits in radiological progression-free survival for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), but it's questioned as a first-line treatment for those without genetic testing or BRCA mutations.
  • - A retrospective study suggests that low-dose abiraterone plus olaparib may still help some mCRPC patients without BRCA mutations by improving prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and symptoms, with a median PSA progression-free survival of 8 months.
  • - While 72% of patients experienced adverse events, including anemia and fatigue, the combination therapy demonstrated a potential for manageable side effects and efficacy in selected cases lacking BRCA mutations

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the factors leading to missed presurgical diagnoses of paragangliomas of the urinary bladder (UBPGLs), rare neuroendocrine tumors that pose diagnostic challenges.
  • Out of 124 patients analyzed from multiple regions, only about 47.6% were diagnosed before surgery, with those diagnosed earlier being younger and having larger tumors.
  • Key symptoms like micturition spells, hypertension, and sweating were found to significantly increase the likelihood of early biochemical testing, suggesting they could help establish timely diagnoses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between cardiovascular health and kidney stone disease, noting a rise in kidney stones globally and their shared risk factors with cardiovascular diseases.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 29,500 U.S. adults to assess cardiovascular health using the Life's Essential 8 score, categorizing participants into poor, intermediate, and ideal health groups.
  • Results indicated that individuals with ideal cardiovascular health had significantly lower odds of developing kidney stones, with a reduction of up to 61% in risk if their health metrics were at least 6.

Article Synopsis
  • The effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy for improving survival in advanced prostate cancer is still unclear, with existing studies focusing on different endpoints like progression-free survival and symptom relief.
  • This study specifically investigates the use of apalutamide as a neoadjuvant treatment to enhance the surgical resection rate in patients with unresectable prostate tumors.
  • Results showed all 7 patients treated with apalutamide were able to successfully undergo radical prostatectomy without significant increases in complications, though further research is needed to confirm the therapy's overall clinical benefits.

Context: IDH1 is a pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) susceptibility gene; however, its role, especially in the Chinese population, has not been characterized.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of somatic IDH1 hotspot variants in a large cohort of Chinese patients with PPGLs and to summarize associated phenotypes.

Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was based on a main cohort of 1141 patients with PPGLs from 2 tertiary-care centers in China.
