Methionine adenosyl transferases (MATs) catalyze the synthesis of the biological methyl donor adenosylmethionine (SAM). Dysregulation of MATs has been associated with carcinogenesis in humans. We previously found that downregulation of the gene enriches the protein-associated translation process and worsens liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) prognosis.

It has been found that the direct/total bilirubin ratio (D/T-BIL) is related to the survival rate of COVID-19 pneumonia. The presence of an excessive amount of bilirubin in human blood also causes liver and neurological damage, leading to death. Therefore, upon considering the adverse impact of the presence of excessive bilirubin in human blood, it has become highly imperative to detect bilirubin in a fast and label-free manner.

Article Synopsis
  • Near-infrared indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography (NIRF) is a technique aimed at improving the visualization of extra-hepatic biliary anatomy during laparoscopic cholecystectomy to prevent bile duct injuries, but its routine use is still debated.
  • A study evaluated the learning curve for two surgeons using NIRF in laparoscopic cholecystectomy, analyzing 199 cases over two years, comparing operative times between NIRF and conventional methods.
  • Results indicated that while there was a 61% learning rate associated with NIRF, the average operation time was longer for the NIRF group compared to the conventional group, suggesting the need for enhanced training strategies to better integrate N

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to compare the outcomes of anatomical resection (AR) versus non-anatomical resection (NAR) for Japanese and Taiwanese patients with single, resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Patients And Methods: A propensity score matched (PSM) analysis was performed to compare the outcomes of the AR group to those of the NAR group. Tumor size <5 cm, T1 or T2 grade, without evidence of extrahepatic metastasis, invasion of portal or hepatic veins, or direct invasion of adjacent organs, were included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Laparoscopic surgery for choledocholithiasis is advancing, with a study on 101 patients undergoing single-incision laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (SILCBDE), showing a 100% duct clearance rate.
  • Complications occurred in 18.8% of patients, often classified as minor (Clavien-Dindo grade I), with older age and complicated cholecystitis linked to higher conversion rates for the procedure.
  • The study suggests that a higher transcystic approach success rate and shorter operative times can be achieved with experience, indicating that SILCBDE is a viable option for treating bile duct stones.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the impact of a laparoscopic training program on surgeons' surgical method preferences for treating acute appendicitis at Show-Chwan Memorial Hospital between 2004 and 2009.
  • The results show a significant increase in the use of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) from 21% before the training to 84.6% after, and an overall rise in LA rates among surgeons who completed the course.
  • Complication rates for LA (6.5%) and open appendectomy (OA) (9.7%) were similar, but patients who underwent LA experienced shorter hospital stays (4.05 days vs. 4.55 days for OA).

Rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a life-threatening complication. Peritoneal metastasis of HCC after spontaneous rupture was seldom noted. We report a case of intraperitoneal metastasis of HCC after spontaneous rupture.

Background: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy offers distinct benefits to patients and has now become the gold standard for the removal of adrenal lesions. Nonetheless, the procedure poses a challenge for surgeons in regards to the maneuverability of instruments, the two-dimensional operating field and the counterintuitive movements. This study reports our experience using the Zeus robotic surgical system in laparoscopic adrenalectomy compared with traditional laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

A 60-year-old female patient suffered unhealed wounds over left flank for around 30 years after surgical removal of left renal stones. Fecal material spilled from the two small openings of the scar, bothered her all day long. During the course of the 30 years, she suffered from intermittent fever, diarrhea and wound pain and presented with malnourished condition.
