We report a direct angstrom resolution measurement of the structure of a molecular-size electronic junction comprising a single (or a double) layer of alkyl-thiol and alkyl-silane molecules at the buried interface between solid silicon and liquid mercury. The high-energy synchrotron x-ray measurements reveal densely packed layers comprising roughly interface-normal molecules. The monolayer's thickness is found to be 3-4 A larger than that of similar layers at the free surfaces of both mercury and silicon.

Methods And Materials: Sixty-five patients with breast carcinoma were treated using 6-MV photons with IMRT technique using the Eclipse Planning System following breast conserving surgery. All patients had a treatment planning CT scan.
Background: Ascites during pregnancy is a rare disorder with wide differential diagnosis.
Case: We report on 8 years of follow-up of a patient suffering from recurrent episodes of ascites following oral contraceptive use and during both her pregnancies. Each ascitic event resulted in spontaneous recovery.
Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders are severe complications that arise after solid organ transplantation, which are often related to Epstein- Barr virus. Reports are anecdotal, and a standardized therapy does not exist. We report a case of a 36-year-old man who developed posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder of the oropharynx 1 year after receiving a heart transplant.

We report the case of a patient who presented with symmetric inflammatory polyarthritis and skin nodules resembling rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The patient responded initially to low-dose prednisolone, but 12 months later, he developed typical features of AITL.

Methods: In a nationwide study, The Children's Cancer Group (CCG) prospectively evaluated 102 children with HGA and postoperative residual disease for efficacy and toxicity of four courses of HDCT before radiotherapy (RT).
Purpose: To determine the dose received by the contralateral breast during primary breast irradiation using IMRT compared to conventional tangential field techniques.
Methods And Materials: Between March 2003 and March 2004, 83 patients with breast carcinoma were treated using 6, 10, or mixed 6/18 MV photons (65 with tangential IMRT technique and 18 with 3-dimensional technique using tangential fields with wedges) for primary breast irradiation following breast-conserving surgery. Paired thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were placed on each patient's contralateral breast, 4 and 8 cm from the center of the medial border of the tangential field.
Presented is the use of fluorescence lifetime (FLT), anisotropy decay, and associated parameters as differential indicators of cellular activity. A specially designed combination of a frequency mode based time resolved microscope and a picoliter well-per-cell array have been used to perform temporal measurements in individual cells under various biological conditions. Two biological models have been examined: mitogenic activation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis) in Jurkat T cells (JTC).

In such assays, the analysis of changes, applying common statistical parameters and tests, often fails to detect significant differences between the investigated samples. The cluster pattern similarity (CPS) measure between two sets of gated clusters is based on computing the difference between their density distribution functions' set points.

Because of the absence of an underlying atomic lattice which typically defines adsorption in crystalline alloys, studies of adsorption in liquid alloys provide unique insight on interatomic interactions at the surface. The observed composition modulation could be accounted for quantitatively by the Defay-Prigogine and Strohl-King multilayer extensions of the single-layer Gibbs model, revealing a near-surface domination of the attractive Bi-Sn interaction over the entropy.

Case Summary: A 36-year-old woman with a 10-year history of autoimmune thyroiditis presented with symptoms and signs consistent with Hashimoto encephalopathy during therapy with pegylated interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C.
Discussion: Hashimoto encephalopathy is a rare autoimmune condition that occurs in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis and high titers of antithyroid antibodies.
Background: The mechanism by which low dose methotrexate (MTX) exerts its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effect in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients is still debated. Recently it has been related to the induction of apoptosis.
Objective: We investigated the degree of apoptotic induction by MTX in lymphocytic (Jurkat T, EL4 T, and Raji B) and monocytic cell lines (U937 and THP1) and its relation to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, as a possible mechanism underlying the apoptotic events.
Clinical in vitro endothelialization has been shown to increase the patency of synthetic vascular grafts. The shear stress resistance of the cultured autologous endothelium represents a crucial cornerstone of the concept. We investigated whether an enrichment of the precoating matrix with adhesion sites can augment endothelial cell attachment.

Phases with surface-normal-oriented molecules are found at high coverage, showing the CS, S, and LS phases found also on water. Phases comprising surface parallel molecules, which do not exist on water, are found here at low coverage.

Two qualitatively different film structures were found, depending on coverage. For high coverage, the film consists of a monolayer of roughly surface-normal molecules, showing a pressure-dependent sequence of structures similar, though not identical, to that of the corresponding water-supported Langmuir films.

As controls, the authors use the results on spontaneous PMN apoptosis (Guejes L, Zurgil N, Deutsch M, Gilburd B, Shoenfeld Y.

A molecular layer of a density approximately 18% higher than that of the bulk is found to form at the free surface of these liquids. In common with surface layering in liquid metals and surface freezing in melts of organic chain molecules, this effect is induced by the lower dimensionality of the surface.

The measured variations of a(c) and k(c) vs temperature and driving frequency are accounted for quantitatively by a hydrodynamic model, revealing a change from a free-slip surface flow, generic for a free liquid surface (T>T(s)), to a surface-pinned, no-slip flow, characteristic of a flow near a wetted solid wall (T
A combined, optospectroscopic and electrochemical assay system for the simultaneous monitoring of intra- and extracellular production of biologically important species has been developed and assessed. The present model system evaluates intra- and extracellular nitric oxide produced by stimulated glioblastoma multiform cell line (A172). The production of endogenous NO was induced by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate and inhibited by N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester.
