Powerful digital grasping is essential for primates navigating arboreal environments and is often regarded as a defining characteristic of the order. However, data on primate grip strength are limited. In this study, we collected grasping data from the hands and feet of eleven strepsirrhine species to assess how ecomorphological variables-such as autopodial shape, laterality, body mass and locomotor mode-influence grasping performance.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery disease is a serious health issue, and the study looks at two different methods of heart surgery called CABG: off-pump and on-pump.
  • The researchers found that patients who had the off-pump technique had a much lower chance of having a stroke during or after their surgery compared to those who had the on-pump technique.
  • Overall, the study suggests that off-pump CABG is a safer choice for patients with severe carotid stenosis, while still helping them live a long time after the surgery.

An ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array (UPLC-PDA) UV detection method was developed here for the first time for simple, rapid, selective and sensitive quantification of the commonly prescribed selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor etoricoxib in low plasma volumes (50 μL). The method includes protein precipitation followed by liquid-liquid extraction, evaporation and reconstitution. A gradient mobile phase of 75:25 going to 55:45 (/) water:acetonitrile (1 mL/min flow rate) was applied.

Background: Preventing disease progression and viral suppression are the main goals of antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by transient elastography is a reliable non-invasive method to assess liver fibrosis in patients with CHB. Our aim was to explore factors that may affect changes in LSMs during long term tenofovir (TDF) monotherapy in a well characterized cohort of patients with compensated CHB.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the deadliest malignancies worldwide, while it persists as the fourth most prevalent cause of cancer-related death in the United States of America. Although there are several novel therapeutic strategies for the approach of this intensely aggressive tumor, it remains a clinical challenge, as it is hard to identify in early stages, due to its asymptomatic course. A diagnosis is usually established when the disease is already in its late stages, while its chemoresistance constitutes an obstacle to the optimal management of this malignancy.

Objectives: Minimally-invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) is a less-invasive alternative to full sternotomy off-pump coronary artery bypass (FS-OPCAB) revascularization of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). Some studies suggested that MIDCAB is associated with a greater risk of graft occlusion and repeat revascularization than FS-OPCAB LIMA-to-LAD grafting. Data comparing MIDCAB to FS-OPCAB with regard to long-term follow-up is scarce.

Midventricular hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is characterized by hypertrophy of the interventricular septum (IVS) and - in rare cases - of the papillary muscles (PM), which subsequently can cause dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) and severe heart failure symptoms. We report on a rare case of a 44-year-old patient suffering from midventricular HOCM with hypertrophic anterolateral PM and an additional chorda between the PM and the IVS.We describe a new surgical approach via right anterolateral thoracotomy in 3-dimensional (3D) video-assisted minimal-invasive technique with resection of hypertrophic PMs as well as the entire mitral valve-apparatus and valve replacement avoiding septal myectomy and potentially associated complications.

Hypothesis: Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) bulk's molecular layering dominates their structure also at the RTIL/sapphire interface, increasing the layer spacing with the cationic alkyl chain length n. However, the negatively-charged sapphire surface compresses the layers, increases the layering range, and affects the intra-layer structure in yet unknown ways.

Experiments: X-ray reflectivity (XR) off the RTIL/sapphire interface, for a broad homologous RTIL series 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide, hitherto unavailable for any RTIL.
