The effects of multilayer blue-green roof on the runoff water quality.

In the context of climate changes, characterized by an increase of short but intense rainfall events and rise of the average temperature, the fast population growth and consequent urbanization require the implementation of innovative solutions to mitigate pluvial floods and, at the same time, reduce the water demand. Among the different nature-based solutions, multilayer blue-green roofs have been widely recognized for their high capacity of reducing runoff generation from rooftops, and their additional storage layer enables to collect water, which could be reused for different purposes. However, the quality of the collected water in a multilayer blue-green roof and the influence that the additional storage layer has on it have not been analysed yet.

Combining electro-bioremediation of nitrate in saline groundwater with concomitant chlorine production.

Groundwater pollution and salinization have increased steadily over the years. As the balance between water demand and availability has reached a critical level in many world regions, a sustainable approach for the management (including recovery) of saline water resources has become essential. A 3-compartment cell configuration was tested for a new application based on the simultaneous denitrification and desalination of nitrate-contaminated saline groundwater and the recovery of value-added chemicals.

[Prognostic value of psychotropic drugs for the risk of accidental falls].

Falls in the elderly are common and often serious. Older adults often take numerous medications for multiple chronic conditions, so they have an increased risk for drugs that potentially cause falls. We studied the association between psychotropic drugs and falls in residential care people in order to identify medications that may increase the falls risk.

Hyperplastic polyp of the stomach simulating hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

We describe a rare case of hyperplastic polyp of the stomach having its clinical origin in the neonatal period and initially stimulating hypertrophic stenosis of the pylorus. After this neoformation, which almost completely obstructed the pylorus, was endoscopically removed, vomiting ceased and a rapid weight gain was observed. It is known that tumors are a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction if compared with hypertrophic stenosis of the pylorus.

Molecular analysis of beta zero-thalassemia intermedia in Sardinia.

In this study we have carried out alpha- and beta-globin gene analysis and defined the beta-globin gene polymorphisms in a group of patients with thalassemia intermedia of Sardinian descent. A group of patients (109) with thalassemia major of the same origin served as control. Characterization of the beta-thalassemia mutation showed either a frameshift mutation at codon 6 or a codon 39 nonsense mutation.

Genetic control of the proportion of gamma chains of human fetal haemoglobin.

The relative proportions of gamma chains of human fetal haemoglobin G gamma, A gamma 75 Ileu (A gamma I) and A gamma 75 Thr (A gamma T) were investigated in homogeneous populations of patients in Algeria exhibiting sickle cell disease and in patients in Algeria and Sardinia with beta-thalassaemia.
