Article Synopsis
  • Mining activities in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, may significantly contribute to an increased prevalence of visible birth defects (BDs) among newborns, with a recorded rate of 399 cases per 100,000 live births between 2016-2021.
  • A cross-sectional study involving 65,474 newborns found that those living in mining zones had more than double the risk of developing visible BDs compared to those in non-mining zones, with specific regions like Mwenga showing even higher risk.
  • Common types of birth defects included musculoskeletal and central nervous system issues, highlighting the need for further research to explore the relationship between mining activities and birth defects.

Varicocele is a disease characterized by an abnormal dilation of the pampiniform plexus that drains the testis. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the curative effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of on some reproductive and antioxidant markers in rats with experimental varicocele. Following varicocele induction, rats (5 per group) were randomly partitioned into untreated varicocele, vitamin E-treated (150 mg/kg), aqueous extract-treated (500 mg/kg), and ethanolic extract-treated (100 mg/kg) animals.

We report an exceptional case of a 7 year-old patient with necrotic small bowel volvulus due to adult ascaris lumbricoides. At the admission, the child had intestinal obstruction evolving since two days with alteration of general state. Abdominal radiography without preparation showed small bowel air-fluid levels and tiger-stripe appearance evoking the diagnosis of acute intestinal obstruction associated with abdominal mass.
