Purpose: When children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are in hospital, difficulties with socialization, communication, and behaviour can be exacerbated. The purpose of this study was to establish feasibility of an enhanced perioperative care pathway.

Methods: Utilizing parental and provider feedback, a protocol including environment modification, anxiolysis plans, specialized order sets, and child life specialist (CLS) support was developed over a nine-month period.

Background: Recent case reports have alerted the medical community of fatality in children receiving codeine after tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the rates of oxygen desaturation before and after adenotonsillectomy in children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), and to examine the relationship between cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) genotype and respiratory events.

Background: The PerfecTemp is an underbody resistive warming system that combines servocontrolled underbody warming with viscoelastic foam pressure relief. Clinical efficacy of the system has yet to be formally evaluated. We therefore tested the hypothesis that intraoperative distal esophageal (core) temperatures with the PerfecTemp (underbody resistive) warming system are noninferior to upper-body forced-air warming in patients undergoing major open abdominal surgery under general anesthesia.
