Background: Bennett's fracture, a fracture-dislocation of the base of the first metacarpal, poses significant challenges due to the unique biomechanics of the thumb's carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. Effective management is critical to restoring thumb function and preventing long-term complications such as arthritis and instability.

Objective: This article provides a comprehensive overview of Bennett's fracture, including its mechanism of injury, diagnostic considerations, and management strategies, with a focus on conservative and surgical options.

The psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine/enteric (PNIE) axis is a fundamental concept in neuroscience, integral to the neuroendocrine system (NES). It encompasses the interactions between behavior, neurology, endocrinology, gut biology, and the immune system. These interactions regulate crucial metabolic processes like glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism, blood pressure, and various homeostatic functions, including blood pressure regulation, thermogenesis and pulmonary hypoxia detection.

Long-term disease-free survival (DFS) of 19 years and 8 months is achieved in an Indian male young patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) with a grade 2 Superior Vena Cava (SVC) syndrome treated with chemotherapy and adjunct personalized Ayurvedic treatment with medicines having antipyretic (Jwaraghna), reduces inflammation and swelling (Shothaghna) and rejuvenating (Rasayana) properties and effective in anemia (Pandu) and respiratory diseases (Diseases of pranavaha srotasa) In January 2002, this patient was diagnosed with Pulmonary Kochs and Anti Koch's treatment was given for 6 months. However, due to persistent low-grade fever and supra clavicular lymph node enlargement, he was further investigated with X-Ray Chest in July 2002 revealing mediastinal lymphadenopathy with Right Costophrenic angle pleural effusion. (Grade 2 SVC syndrome).

  • Ankle fractures are frequent injuries in emergency departments that often require realignment, traditionally managed with sedation or anesthesia, which have risks.
  • The ankle block, a type of regional anesthesia, is gaining popularity for its localized pain relief and reduced systemic complications, enhanced by ultrasound guidance.
  • While there are challenges like the need for specialized training and sometimes insufficient pain control, the ankle block is becoming a favored, opioid-sparing option in emergency care, with potential for broader application through ongoing advancements and research.

Intraoperative blood loss management is a critical concern in orthopaedic surgeries, particularly in trauma and complex elective procedures. Traditionally, allogeneic blood transfusions have been used to manage significant blood loss, but they carry risks such as transfusion reactions, infections, and increased healthcare costs. Cell salvage, or autotransfusion, offers a safer alternative by collecting, processing, and reinfusing the patient's own blood during surgery.

In an Indian female patient diagnosed as an aggressive refractory Natural Killer/T-cell Lymphoma treated with radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy, long term overall survival (OS) of 10 years was achieved. She refused Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) after relapse and opted 2nd line chemotherapy. After completion of conventional treatment, she started Oral Ayurvedic Medicines (OAM) which possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and to a certain extent anti-cancer activity.

Objective: To evaluate the validity of the Utah statewide All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), we compared breast cancer-specific treatments and dosages with gold-standard abstraction of medical records.

Study Design: In this pilot study, breast cancer treatments were abstracted by a certified tumor registrar at the Utah Cancer Registry (UCR) for patients diagnosed in 2013 with breast cancer. The abstraction of medical records was the gold standard for comparison with treatments identified in the APCD.

  • Cerebral vasospasm (CV) after tumor resection is uncommon but linked to serious complications, prompting a study into its risk factors.
  • A review of 61 studies found that CV occurs more in males with an average age of 47.3, commonly after resection of posterior fossa tumors, especially schwannomas and pituitary adenomas.
  • Symptoms usually include altered mental status and weakness, often occurring within the first two weeks post-surgery, and the condition can lead to high mortality rates and significant long-term deficits.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on understanding how adult heart cells (cardiomyocytes) remain in a state of cell cycle arrest and how the YAP5SA protein can help them re-enter the cell cycle, offering insights into their growth and division.
  • - Researchers used various methods, including clonal analyses and single-cell RNA sequencing, to examine the characteristics and behaviors of cardiomyocytes influenced by YAP5SA.
  • - Findings indicate that while YAP5SA cardiomyocytes can efficiently divide after exiting the cycle, there are barriers, like the checkpoint activity from P21, that hinder their progression through the cycle, suggesting new ways to understand and potentially manipulate cardiac cell division.

Article Synopsis
  • - The posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) is important for understanding sensory issues in the gluteal region, especially due to risks from injuries and pressure ulcers.
  • - During a routine anatomical dissection of a 56-year-old male cadaver, a significant connection between the PFCN and the inferior gluteal nerve (IGN) was identified, which is important for diagnostic and surgical procedures.
  • - This connection could help improve nerve block procedures for surgeries related to the thigh, knee, and upper leg, as the motor response from the IGN can indicate how effectively the PFCN is blocked.
