Thyroid allostasis in drug-free affective disorder patients.

Aim: To assess the thyroid allostasis in drug-free patients with affective disorder.

Methods: Patients with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder as drug-free, defined as those without psychiatric drugs exposure for at least 4 months before admission, from a tertiary hospital were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The primary outcomes were "structure parameters of thyroid homeostasis", which include "thyroid's secretory capacity" (SPINA-GT), "sum step-up activity of deiodinases" (SPINA-GD), the ratio of total to free thyroxine and "thyroid homeostasis central set point" (TSH index and "thyroid feedback quantile-based index" [TFQI]), calculated by TSH and thyroid hormones measured at admission.

The emergence of new variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has generated recurring worldwide infection outbreaks. These highly mutated variants reduce the effectiveness of current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, which are designed to target only the spike (S) protein of the original virus. Except for the S of SARS-CoV-2, the immunoprotective potential of other structural proteins (nucleocapsid, N; envelope, E; membrane, M) as vaccine target antigens is still unclear and worthy of investigation.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Xinxiang city, Henan, China. Patients were drug-naïve patients affected by first episode schizophrenia, aged 14-50 years old and admitted to the "Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University" from January 2018 to December 2018.

Effect of flavonoid intake on circulating levels of adiponectin and leptin: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials.

This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to explore the effects of flavonoid intake on adiponectin and leptin levels. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched on March 1, 2021. Random-effects, subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were conducted on 40 publications.

DNA Vaccines Expressing the Envelope and Membrane Proteins Provide Partial Protection Against SARS-CoV-2 in Mice.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a public health emergency of international concern, and an effective vaccine is urgently needed to control the pandemic. Envelope (E) and membrane (M) proteins are highly conserved structural proteins among SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV and have been proposed as potential targets for the development of cross-protective vaccines. Here, synthetic DNA vaccines encoding SARS-CoV-2 E/M proteins (called p-SARS-CoV-2-E/M) were developed, and mice were immunised with three doses intramuscular injection and electroporation.

Aims: We aimed to assess the association between early onset of affective disorders and hypothyroidism in a larger number of psychiatric drug-free patients with bipolar disorder (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD).

Methods: Early onset of affective disorders was defined as BD and MDD developed before the age of 22 years. The hypothyroidism hierarchy were diagnosed biochemically and included subclinical and overt hypothyroidism in this study.

Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a common cardiovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality in China. The CHD risk prediction model has a great value in early prevention and diagnosis.

Methods: In this study, CHD risk prediction models among rural residents in Xinxiang County were constructed using Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression algorithms with identified 16 influencing factors.

Clinical significance of high mobility group box 1/toll-like receptor 4 in obese diabetic patients.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an alarmin that may link to obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present study analyzed the correlation between HMGB1/ Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and certain biochemical parameters in obese (OB) diabetic patients. 40 normal glucose tolerant subjects (NGT) and 40 patients with newly diagnosed T2DM were enrolled.

Association between valproate treatment for acute phase schizophrenia and risk of new onset hypothyroidism.

We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to May 20, 2018, to identify potential meta-analyses that examined the association of folate with any health outcome.

Air pollution exposure leads to increased mortality and morbidity rates of respiratory diseases. Most of the evidence was founded on acute diseases such as acute lower respiratory diseases. Background: The relationship between physical activity (PA) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk was inconsistent. We therefore conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate the association of PA and CKD.

Since 2011, Zhejiang province has eliminated iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in its populations. Following this achievement, a new revised iodine concentration in iodised salt was implemented in Zhejiang in 2012. However, the re-emergence of iodine deficiency has been reported in pregnant women.

Background: A number of studies have explored the link of antenatal folic acid (FA) intake with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, with inconsistent findings. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant studies to elucidate the actual association between maternal FA intake during the prenatal period and the risk of ASD in offspring.

Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched up to June 7, 2018, without language restriction.

Temporal trends in normal weight central obesity and its associations with cardiometabolic risk among Chinese adults.

Normal weight central obesity (NWCO), a distinct phenotype of obesity that is associated with a higher risk of cardiometabolic dysregulation, has received growing attention in the scientific literature. In this study, we aimed to report the prevalence of NWCO in the general Chinese adults and its secular trend from 1993 to 2011. The comorbid cardiometabolic risk of NWCO was also explored.

The correlation between DNA methylation and transcriptional expression of human dopamine transporter in cell lines.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between DNA methylation and expression of human dopamine transporter (hDAT). We examined methylation status of hDAT in cells with various hDAT expression levels, including two dopaminergic neural cell lines (SK-N-AS and SH-SY-5Y) and one non-dopaminergic cell line (HEK293) by bisulfite sequencing PCR(BSP). The effects of DNA methyltransferase inhibitor 5-aza-dC or/and histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi, sodium butyrate, NaB) on the DNA methylation status and mRNA expression levels of hDAT were examined.

Early onset of cardiometabolic risk factor profiles in drug naïve adolescents and young adults with first-episode schizophrenia.

Objective And Method: We performed a case-control study, which included antipsychotic-naïve first-episode schizophrenia (FES) of adolescents and young adults and general population controls, to investigate the early-onset cardiometabolic risk factors in FES.

Results: FES had more frequent lower HDL-C when compared to controls. However, the distribution of BMI and the frequency of hypercholesterolemia, elevated LDL-C, hypertriglyceridemia in FES were not significantly different to controls.
